how to get rid of wax on textured black plastic?
 

like the title states... i messed up and got wax on the black textured bumper trim on my car and now it won't come off... what can i do?

make sure its not taking plastic with it

or a cloth and scrub hard

the cloth thing didn't work... or i'm doing it wrong. even tried wd40 :o

Peanut Butter

I just bought some of that "back 2 black" stuff and it seems to work.

oh man someone said peanut butter too... i thought my friend was just pulling my leg.

try a little gasoline on a cloth.. make sure you wipe it clean after though lol ..

With gasoline, you risk fading the plastic.

Try a wax remover. If that fails, try a few gentle passes with a pressure washer.

meh, the pressure washer thing didn't work... too scared to use the strong setting.

i don't dare use gasoline! i once overfilled my tank and spilled a tiny bit down the side... and everything went dull on me :(

still haven't gotten around to buying peanut butter...

I've also heard Mr Clean Magic Eraser. That or some all purpose cleaner and a brush (use an old toothbrush) to get inside the textured plastic area. I've also used bug and tar remover as well.

so the bug and tar remover worked?

are you really trying that?

I would try the magic eraser first.

If not, yes, peanut butter has worked for many people in the past. Apply some peanut butter, and then take a small brush and scrub the area. The oil in the peanut butter helps lift the wax.

Yes - bug and tar remover did work - it seemed to work well on smooth plastics. Textured I'd imagine would be a little harder just because the wax is in all the little groves as well. Find an old toothbrush and use it to give it a bit of a scrub as well to get in between the textures.

And yes - peanut butter works. Just google removing wax from plastic trim and see all the people that have tried it. :D

i haven't been able to try anything yet... i have the magic eraser, and i got one of those little peanut butter packets from mcdonalds when i had breakfast there this morning... but it's been raining too hard and i have no garage :(

damn. used the peanut butter for breakfast without thinking the other day so i'm out of luck on that one.

there was a break in the weather and i tried some leftover bug and tar remover... no luck. but i only had a rag... i'll try using a brush next time :o

I heard that tarminator worked for one person but have not personally tried it. Thumper, which brand of bug and tar remover did you try?

I find tire shine any kinda tire shine and a old tooth brush or old soft paint brush will work too.. does not do any damage to any plastics and details the hard to reach areas too

tire shine isn't meant to be used to clean stuff though. It could be just making the area all shined up, and more or less covering it then actually cleaning it.

i was at unique detailing getting some paint damage repaired and asked if they could help clean up my mess. they ended up using a commercial product from autoglym and cleaned it up in seconds :o

Try using a stiff bristle toothbrush. The trick is not to scrub it, but gently massage it. This will typically lift the dry wax out of the textured plastic.

oops forgot to follow up on this. it was a product made by turtle wax.

Use a blow drier or heat gun (not too close) to heat the area, softening the wax. Then use whatever to quickly get it off.

I have Wax Blaster Wax Remover in stock now...

Waiting until I get wax on my trim so I can try it out.
