I passed Aircare with a new 3" Magnaflow with no egr or oxygen sensor after failing miserably 2 times previously on HC and CO. The cat wasn't the only thing I changed, but I'm certain it was a major factor in getting a pass.

How did you get the sizing information? If you call up lordco, they could easily give you the part # and what not.

The reason they were going to charge you $1300 is probably because they were going to order one from the dealer which is THE BEST OPTION if you can afford it. Obviously, many people can't. On the other hand, how come your cat failed so quickly? Does you car burn major oil or something?

Any who, a generic properly sized magna-flow cat will do you find, although they don't perform as well as an OEM one nor do they last as long.

+1

Any universal cat should work though those high-flow ones have just enough baffles to pass federal laws. The OEM ones are best. Go for the Magnaflow to save money.

Did your CEL come on because of the cat? I would just disconnect the battery and see if the code comes back after you replace the thing...or could beg around RS to scan codes some members have readers

I think Princess Auto has a cheap OBDII reader too..

Well, regardless of what you find on the celica forum, the people who you're buying the parts from should be able to tell you/find you what you need. I'm not familiar with the exhaust/cat setup on the Celica but you may have to cut off the old one and weld the new one on. If not, it should just be a fairly simple bolt on affair.

yes lordco should be able to get you this but here is a link incase you don't have 'a guy' at lordco lol.

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

also not sure on how to test CEL codes on the toyota, but any OBD vehicle should have a procedure for having the computer flash the codes out at you on the CEL so you can decode

Why is the OEM cat better than a magnaflow?

Because OEM is meant to pass emissions and last a long time.
Whereas the Magnaflow is designed for flow first, emissions later.
They both work, but the Magnaflow is the Legal version of a test pipe because it's still a cat.

Just a side note but I've seen a lot of friend's Toyotas (Tacomas, Camry, Corollas, pretty random) throw a CEL code for bad converter efficiency. In all cases, it was actually the after converter O2 sensor that was bad. You might want to double check to make sure it's the converter and not the O2 before dropping money on parts.

No, shops like that never do it for free. How did your dad's shop diagnose the problem? I just suggested what I suggested because it was the after cat o2 that measures the readings giving a false bad reading to the ecu even though the cat was perfectly fine (the Toyotas were in between 97-01's, all had 150-225K). A NTK o2 ($200) fixed the problem.

Can you get your dads shop to test the O2 to make sure that is not the cause?? Did they check the emissions to see if the cat was working properly or did they just pull the code and say it's the cat?

it was my dads friends shop...(not super close friend) so im sure he would charge me also. they pulled the code and said to find out the exact problem he would have to call a "specialist" and itll cost like something like 200 bucks an hour..... to find out my problem. i said hell no.
