That's what most real fish and chip places do. Go to the U.K. and all places do that.

Yuck? Why can't they buy some kind of food wrapping paper to wrap up the F+C? I don't want used newspapers or any newspapers for that matter touching my food! lol.

Even at my dad's place (which is a Chinese restaurant!) we don't use newspapers, we use paper boxes designed to hold food.

westcoastgsr 05-23-2009 08:16 AM

Its fish and chips its always like that, its tradition (also most places use paper wraping for food first then the news paper for presentation). Just open it up and enjoy the fish and chips.

I'm out of word.

Ahahahaha.....newspapers....LOL....need to brush up on your fnc history!!

IMO, the best place for fnc is in Squamish....not exactly in the LM....but well worth the drive....Wigan Pier! Other than that, I agree that Pajos is 50/50.....

I wonder how a real chippy would do if someone were to open one up around here....

Princess121 05-23-2009 01:29 PM

I didnt read the whole thread, but Pajo's has two locations at steveston..the one down on the dock, and there is one at the park. You have to walk past that cannery and its just at the end of the path. Pajos also has another location, its located in Port Coquitlam, On Reeve St.

I know some places it is.

SiR001 05-24-2009 11:58 PM

i just got back from Newport, Oregon...Nana's Irish Pub.

We were walking by, saw someone having it on the patio and had to try it.

OMG - best fish N chips I've had in my life -- good sized fish(meaty compared to all the ones in the lower mainland), light tasty batter...fries are ok, but the fish is awesome, as is the tartar sauce http://nanasirishpub.com/menu......

slammer111 05-26-2009 10:08 PM

Pajos = #1. Ginger root beer is also crazy good.
Cockney Kings (Hastings in Burnaby) = #2. $9 AYCE fish and chips (Monday - Wednesday), sooo deadly.

Anyone know if the Atlantic Trap on Davie (or was it Drake?) is still around? They used to have AYCE fish + chips too, and also a live Irish band.

Go Fish by Granville Island...huge lineups everyday. My favorite place. Their other items on the menu are good too.

Derek_N84 05-27-2009 01:04 AM

^ +124684738263861284618891263 for Go Fish.

That place is orgasmic. Killer busy on sunny weekends, some people wait like half an hr just to order their food.

Add another +1 for Moby Dick's in White Rock.

I'm a fan of Go Fish too, but I'm always pissed at how insanely busy it is. The halibut is much better than the cod, always get halibut. I also see a lot of people ordering the fish tacos, so I have to try them out next time.

Never been to "Go Fish" but how are the portions and how much do they cost(compared to other F&C's, like Pajos)

SkinnyPupp 05-27-2009 03:31 AM

The best fish N chips I ever had is the stuff we make at home, with homemade tartar sauce. And guess what, we're having it tonight! w00t

It's around the same price as any other place...the Fish Tacones are VERY good..

slammer111 05-27-2009 04:19 PM

I think our recipe is based off this one. Although I certainly don't add the garlic powder and paprika. It's not needed.

A couple things to note:

-Make sure to use oil that has a good amount of saturated fat. If not, you will not get a crispy fried batter. The restaurants use tallow (beef fat) but you could use lard (pork fat) or any combination. If you want to use pure vegetable oil, use peanut oil. If you think this is bad for you, you are an idiot. If you think canola or "vegetable oil" (soybean oil) is good for you, you are even dumber.

-Also be sure to coat the fish a bit in corn starch first. It will give the batter something to cling to, and prevent it from falling apart.

-The batter also makes great onion rings

-The best fish to use is cod, halibut, or pollock. I use pollock because it's the cheapest here (all three are imported, pollock is about $3 for a pound, halibut about $5, and cod at least $8) and it makes great fish and chips.

-Lightly sprinkle them with salt immediately after coming out of the fryer.

Follow those steps, and I guarantee that your fish n chips will be at least as good as any restaurant you've been to, if not better. It is SO easy to make and SO cheap to make, I would feel really fucking stupid to pay like $12 or $20 for some fish and chips at a restaurant now.

Yum!
