The only magnets powerful enough to scrub data from a drive platter are laboratory degaussers or those used by government agencies to wipe bits off media. "In the real world, people are not losing data from magnets," says Bill Rudock, a tech-support engineer with hard-drive maker Seagate. "In every disk," notes Rudock, "there's one heck of a magnet that swings the head."

The real problem is if you open the hard drive enclosure and expose the plates to the musty air in your mom's basement. All of the cheeto dust in the air can't be good on the C: \Documents and Settings\leet4lyfe\personal\hidden\shemalepr0ns directory and whatever else you have stored on your HD

question(s).
I don't have much for magnets, but I have a 12W7 sitting in my room. Would it work too?
also, do I need to remove the harddrive from the computer or can I just put it close? power on or off?!!!
Thanks

Using a compass on your hard-drive can seriously and permanently erase all information stored on it. The polarization transversal compasing effects of said item will cause the invex data packets to reset. Use magnets only.

I'm not exactly sure how Windows 3.1 (DOS 5.0-6.1) can suddenly format such enormous platters.......

actually B is induced by the current flowing in your circuit
actually, what you have to do is take copper wire, wrap it around your HDD a zillion times. Until it looks like a coccon, then take the two ends and touch them to a car battery a couple times.
that'll yeild atleast 500x whatever your old disk space is rated at. seagate does this all the time to recycle their old diskes.
shit. i just bumped this thread didn't realize it was old.
