Cleaning Out Wax

So I need to go to a hearing center to get some ear impressions done for my custom headphones. I book the appointment and they told me that I must come into the clinic with wax-free ears.

Now I'm just wondering.. would any doctor be able to clean my ears? Could I just use any of those over-the-counter ear cleaners? Or would it probably be best to go to a ENT specialist, and if so, does anyone know any that charges reasonably well?

Thanks

- Bernie

Ive always woundered the best way. Im told the ear cleaners with budds on the end just push wax back further.

dont they have those solutions u can buy in the pharmacy section. its basically some saline type solution that u use this squirt applicator.

ive personally never used them before though.

If you go to the doctor they will put a small cup under your ear and squirt inside with a solution to clean it out. It feels weird but works very very well. You would be surprised how much comes out.

Berz out.

Sounds simple enough in theory. Is it something that one must need to go to the doctor for or is the procedure safe enough to do at home by yourself with solution SG provided?

doctor.

you cant do it yourself. trust me, some people have way more wax in their ears than they think. you cant look down your own ear.

get a gf to look in and see how dirty it is.

Noir 12-15-2008 04:21 PM

So now the question is, how often do you guys see your doctor for ear cleaning?

quasi 12-16-2008 11:50 AM

You can do it yourself with the over the counter chemicals but it will probably take a few days of treating them. This is coming from a guy who has to go to the Doctor 3-4 times a year to get my ears flushed because I produce so much of nastiest it plugs my ear canals to the point where I can barely hear.

If you put oil in your ear it will actually break the wax down and make it soft as well so it should come out in the shower.

I had mine done last year, and jesus everything was sooooo bloody loud after

ShyGuy 12-16-2008 12:47 PM

i think doctors recommend that you use mineral oil to get it out.

Yup mineral oil, vegetable oil it doesn't matter they will all break the wax down making it soft enough to come out in the shower.

I think I'll get my doctor to clean it out, haha. I clean my ears often with some tissue (which I probably shouldn't) but I don't like having my in-ear headphone tips all gross and shit.

Thanks

Post up when done and let us know how you liked it....

I had this problem probably about 6-8 years ago.

Doctor told me to use over the counter solution for few days. It got to such a bad point that I couldnt even hear anything.

Ended up going to the doctor and he brought up the flusher thing. I think he just ended up using water and I saw a shit load of ear wax came out. It was insane amounts, even the doctor commented on how much I had.

After the cleaning, I swear I can hear soooo much better!

twitchyzero 12-16-2008 08:45 PM

you dont need a doctor cleaning out your ears unless you think your hearing is impaired, no?

Inaii 12-16-2008 09:38 PM

I use a little bottle of Jennsenn Ear Wax Removal solution that I bought at Shoppers. I put a couple drops in each ear before bed, then stuff cotton in and go to sleep. I also find baby oil works really well too.

They generally don't like doing it unless there is a really bad build up. It can irritate your ear drum. I guess it would depend on the Doctor though I've had it done by probably a dozen different ones over the years. A few have told me to do the oil thing and come back without spraying the water in there. I only have it done where it's at the point where my ear or ears or plugged to the point where it sounds like it would if you plugged your ears with your fingers.

Razor Ramon HG 12-16-2008 11:12 PM

Hmm... well I've never had earwax clogging up my hearing. My mom use to clean my ears as a kid, and she always told me that I never had ear wax build up because mine were more of the liquid as opposed to the harden wax?

Fafine 12-18-2008 06:18 PM

go to your doctor and ask him if he could flush out your ear wax. he makes you lie down then puts this cup thing underneath your ear and he'll use a water gun to shoot water into your ear. it'll get everything out.

first time i went he prescribed a liquid ear drop and told me to use it daily and come back after a week. this loosen the wax and at the end of the week he used the water gun which got the rest out.

he also said to do this every 6months

Razor Ramon HG 12-18-2008 08:47 PM

Went to my doctor today. He looked into my ear, said I had no earwax and to not worry. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones then?

SkinnyPupp 12-18-2008 09:23 PM

I guess it didn't look like this then:
