I saw a rusted out Volvo 240 try to drift the Broadway exit on Gallardi. He had fire coming out of the exhaust. Was that you?

Of AWD? Distribute engine torque to as many contact points to minimize the chance of traction loss. Most newer AWD systems have a snow mode that locks the torque distribution to 50/50 front/rear.

if and when the tire isnt spinning, u get even power to all wheels (or whatever the computer distributes it as)

its when u break that initial coefficient of friction, that u lose that ability to spread even power.

but until then, its great for dead stop acceleration

Does this apply for the STI as well? Or because it's a performance car, it has like fulltime AWD?

the STI has 3 differentials that are lockable no?

so with the push of u a button, the car can act fwd, rwd, awd. so with that said, a lockable differential is way better than an open differential.

it comes down to how much $$$ a manufactuer wants to put into their drive train. eg, ur paying for a premium for the STI, ur not paying for its high styling interior, ur paying for its legendary drive train. on my highlander (de-lux'd rx300) ur paying for value, so the drive train is good, but its not gonna win rally's or offroading comps or rock climbing, the 13,000 difference between the hihglander and the rx300 is for the interior, leather, luxury goodies, vsc...

I thought AWD systems were set up to send power to the other wheels when one starts slipping?

For my Pathfinder, that is pretty much what happens.

When put into AUTO MODE, the truck is pretty much RWD until one of the wheels slip. Then, it switches to 4WD which quite noticeable by the dip in RPMs and a minute jerk which seems like a typical automatic gear shift.

I swear that is so useless in the snow.
yeah that's why you'll see differential-lock for SUVs. you can lock the differential for off roading.

If you do get stuck in the snow with your non lsd car, try using your left foot to apply some brake force while you give it some gas..... the braking will slow down the spinning wheel; therefore, sending power to the wheel that's not moving. I don't really want to get into alot of details, but basically, apply a bit of brake while tapping the gas lightly is alot more effective than giving it alot of gas (like most motorist I see doing when they are stuck).

i would think that because of the shit tires, the lsd is whats keeping me going thru snow/ice.
