I just installed this onto a old cheap laptop that came with vista home premium ..
1.6ghz celeronM and 1.5gb of ram
It struggled to run vista alot of the time, so I switched to xp. Now with windows 7 it feels as fast as a recent (2months old) clean xp install!

And! I didnt have to fish for any drivers (unlike xp) everything works perfect right away.
And! I can use the transparent themes and all the bells and whistles without lag.

I am very impressed:D

ps i love this new interface

Really on a celeron? That's really interesting I may have to try it myself :D MS should offer Vista users a discounted upgrade price haha :haha:

Its seems to be the same as it was on xp.

And I just put a Starcraft cd in.. and it crashed on me.
Windows7 does not do well with 16bit programs(not yet anyways) and starcraft just happens to have a stupid 16bit installer :(

unit 01-06-2009 02:42 PM

hows the software compatibility so far?

aZn_b0i 01-09-2009 09:30 AM

Anyone managed to get the key for the official beta release yet?

yuusha 01-09-2009 12:11 PM

Any idea if things like patching uxtheme.dll/shell32.dll/browseui.dll for custom themes and navigation bars still work the same as they did for Vista?

xp wasnt so rock solid pre-sp1. if you're comparing it to vista, xp has a 6 year head start to get things as smooth as they are. having both ive had NO problems with drivers or any of my slightly older hardware to work on my new computer. personally im excited in the direction that windows 7 is going since its reducing the strain placed on hardware which vista is notorious for.

we all know that OSX is probably one of the most efficient OS's out there, but it's not like Leopard doesn't have problems (the dual display+refresh problem comes to mind). but not everyone has the money to spend on a mac, especially when macs are ++ meaning you always have to buy apple-compatible software. and i'm not implying illegal torrents, but rather freeware which is predominantly windows-biased. there are mac freeware, but if you compare the amount to the amount available for pc's it's night and day.

*edit* im not an ms fanboy nor do i loathe osx. i use my sister's macbook regularly and tbh i would get a macbook pro in a heartbeat as i prefer osx to windows. but like i said, i dont have 2 grand to spend on a computer.

there's a reason why MS and windows is still around- market share for macs are a fraction of PC's because macs arent cost effective for the users who have a 300-400 dollar budget.

So I'm downloading the beta at this moment.. onto my laptop... hopefully it'll won't be too hard to restore to xp if this thing is too buggy?

I suggest doing a dual boot of it if you're not too sure of it. Get Partition Magic and create a new partition. Then just install it from XP onto that new drive.

Windows 7 is very smooth even with some older hardware

-Intel 1.8ghz s478
-2GB DDR-400
-120GB IDE 7200RPM 2MB
-GeForce FX5600

flameboy54 01-10-2009 06:29 PM

Currently running on...

- AMD Athlon XP 2000+ (1.6GHz)
- 512MB PC2100
- 20GB IDE 7200
- Radeon 9000 64MB

Smooth but slow for me. Also, my video card is not supported so everything is stretched horizontally.

As stated, not really feeling the taskbar. But otherwise, it seems to be very good.

Ok I'm normally good with computers.. but once I got the drive partitioned.. I would have no idea how to install 7 onto the new drive and make it a dual boot drive...

Canadian Rider 01-11-2009 01:22 AM

So apparently I'm not able to download it.. as soon as I pick the language and press download it goes to the microsoft screen where it looks like it's loading or whatever with the little dots that are circulating and doesn't do anything from there... i've even left that page up for hours with no change... the dots continue to circle...

oh and for all the computer guys I'm not too sure on the difference between 32bit and 64bit.. which one do I want? I'm assuming 32bit since im on a laptop with an amd turion 1.8ghz processor and 2gigs of ram..?

Armind 01-11-2009 03:33 AM

Is it worth a the try? Kinda tempting..

You have to burn the ISO file that you download into a DVD. Or you can use a virtual drive software to emulate a DVD drive. The Win7 installer will automatically create a boot menu for you so that you can pick which OS to use at startup.

Google Chrome has problems loading large files and it is a known bug. As someone else has mentioned, you can use Firefox to download it and it should be fine.

Your Turion chip can handle 64-bit. However, it's very likely that you're running a 32-bit version of Windows right now anyways. 32-bit = more compatibility with software.

Yeah, it is. If you're into tinkering with this kind of stuffs, I highly recommend it. I would also highly recommend that you do NOT make this into your primary OS since it is still beta.

Right on, so if i use something like deamon tools to open the iso and just go to install i will be given the option to install windows 7 onto the new partitioned drive that i've made? then it will create the boot menu?...

and yeah i've got it almost downloaded now.. it was the chrome problem.
