Root Canal or getting tooth pulled

which is better to do ?
get the root canal thingy or just pull the tooth out
because some people say after the root canal it just comes back or something like that an you have to get it yanked anyway .
its one of the tooth at the very back on the top
anybody ever done this before ?

DavidNguyen 01-02-2009 10:11 PM

if its your chewing tooth. then root canal.
kuz once its out. its out man. never goona grow back.
i had a root canal. well worth the money.
the cavity will come back only if u dont brush.
should have done that in the first place hehe.

Harvey Specter 01-02-2009 10:11 PM

When you get a root canal done you're tooth is drilled out and is basically dead. The horror stories you hear about is people who get a root canal done, get a temp filling but don't get a cap. If you don't get a cap you risk breaking your tooth and if you break your tooth you'll have to have it removed

I honestly wouldn't have a tooth removed unless it's abcessed or it has to be removed because of other issues like it's cracked or major decay. If you get a root canal but you can't afford a cap just be extra careful with the root canal tooth.

Root canal is retarded painful and long where as getting it pulled is relatively short.

But on the other hand, getting a root canal will save your tooth (get it capped) and getting it pulled (well... it's gone forever)..

orange7 01-02-2009 11:35 PM

holy fuk..
it's going to hurt a lot...
GL man!
Make sure you bring an onion so when you start crying you can blame it on the onion.

tonyvu 01-02-2009 11:54 PM

ouch a root canal.... painful but well worth the money bro.

Lowered_Klass 01-03-2009 12:20 AM

Go with the root canal, and if you have the money, get it done at a specialist. Your dentist should be able to refer you to one, even if he/she does them in their office. Trust me on this, it's worth the extra money.

If you pull that tooth, you do have another option to fill that space. You can get an dental implant placed in that spot, and then they would put a crown over top of the implant. It's the next best thing to having a natural tooth, but this route will cost you serious money.

Root canal shouldn't hurt if done properly.

donot521 01-03-2009 06:55 AM

Not really...

You feel a yanking for about 3-5 secs and then it is done.

Ferra 01-03-2009 07:16 AM

root canal was one of the most painful experience I've ever had...

My dentist probably under dosed the anesthesia...for the whole 30mins operation, I can feel him plucking, pulling, and cutting the nerves under my teeth...tears was coming out of my eyes the whole time.

+ it costs around $1100 for the operation (and this is the discounted price....I asked him for a discount...lol maybe that's why it was so painful for me.)

But given the choice, i would never have one of my teeth pulled unless it is one of the wisdom teeth. It just looks & feels wrong

quasi 01-03-2009 07:21 AM

I've post about this in the health forum before but I have had more then my fair share of root canals on my molers due to grinding and tooth damage. Like Jah said the horror stories are usually because the person did not get the tooth crowned after having the root canal done.

I have had 5 root canals and I find getting my teeth cleaned more intrusive then a root canal except for the first one I had done. It was done by a quack of a dentist who did not freeze it properly. If done properly you will not feel much of anything at all and if you do it is not being done correctly. You should find a new dentist, I did and she is awesome. I used to put going to the dentist off because I never had one that cared but now that I do it is such a breeze.

SumAznGuy 01-03-2009 08:23 AM

I agree with what Quasi said.

The worst part about my root canal was having to have my mouth wide open for an hour so he could reach in to the back molar. That and he was using some heating device, similar to a sautering iron but thinner, and he accidentally touched the side of my mouth with it.

All in all, I find regular dental cleaning more painful than the root canal.

ToyotaPowah 01-03-2009 12:25 PM

Root canals aren't too bad. I had 2 done at once and it was actually a huge relief. Mostly because both of the teeth were badly abcessed and I had been in pain for 3 days without having it attended to :P

welfare 01-03-2009 01:35 PM

i'd do the root canal.
you want to explore every possibility before having a tooth removed as it may upset the balance between the rest of them
i've had a few, and can't lie; they hurt. but hey, can't run away from everything.
that short period of pain will outweigh the problems that could incur from having it removed
god. just thinking of the sound of that drill hitting the teeth. i love it.
ever had work done on your upper incisors? when they put that needle through your gum and up toward your nostril?
that is some good pain

Harvey Specter 01-03-2009 01:49 PM

The other reason why your root canal might be very painful is because your tooth is abscessed and the dentist has not properly drained the tooth.

3seriesBeeM 01-03-2009 03:52 PM

i got a root canal and it wasnt that painfuil i guess you just have to find the right dentist but ya root canal will be the better option because they remove all your roots so your tooth is basically dead but at least its still your tooth and not an implant. but ya i suggest finding a good dentist.

icemiko 01-03-2009 03:54 PM

I got a root canal done a long time ago and it was ok for me, didn't hurt at all.

Ch28 01-03-2009 04:00 PM

...I had a root canal done earlier last year and it didn't hurt  Just make sure you don't use that tooth to eat anything super hard and you're good to go. Pulling a tooth is much cheaper too. A root canal will probably run you ~$700 and a crown will be around the same price.

Hehe 01-04-2009 02:03 PM

If you have some free time, visit Asia countries for root canal.

I did mine in Taiwan (needed it done for 2 teeth) and even I didn't have medical coverage in TW, the price + air ticket was still less that what I would pay to have it done here in Canada.

Psykopathik 01-04-2009 04:35 PM

did a root a=canal. never fgot it filled/crowned properly. just trying to avoid it.

tooth cracked. had to pull it.

im missing 2 teeth now. lucky you cant really tell
