I remember 55k for electrical engineering was the stats I saw some where. I don't know where I saw it but with a quick search on google. according to this website for EIT(engineering in training):

http://www.payscale.com/research/CA/...g_(EIT)/Salary

Electrical engineering EIT is at 52k a year in canada.

interestingly, the same job in the State is about 10k higher in salary across the board.

Whats the income tax is like in the states? do they get taxed less? maybe I should move to the states.

I think you forgot to calculate some important variables..

such as electrical bill, and gas bill? unless that is included in the rent..

but with the saving, you won't have enough money when you need it for emergency..
such as vacations, new snow tires, ICBC deductable, tickets, etc. etc..
shits happen all the time, and you need to be prepared to shell out money..

exactly....

i'm glad i've saved up some for the icbc deductible.

theives should have their hands chopped off

Occupation: Electrical Engineer
Salary: $55,000 (average)
Salary after tax: $42,000
Monthly Pay: $3500

Rent: $1500
Car payment: $400
Car insurance: $250
Gas: $200
Internet/Cellphone: $100
Food: $600
Everyday stuff: $100
Monthly saving: $100
----------------------------
Monthly expense: $3250

Money left over for cloths, toys, entertainment, partying... : $250 (thats not enough)

55grand seems alot but after a quick estimate I will still be pretty poor living on paycheck to paycheck if I want to sustain any kind of ok life style.

How does everyone here spend their salary or will be spending their salary?

why is your rent so high?

CRX SiR 01-03-2009 03:13 PM

Their market is better. Same with Ontario. More big companies = better pay.

you don't get taxed less or more,
in simple terms, you pay the more expensive of the two, which usually means you pay the canadian taxes.. and it also depends if you lived the full year in the US as well

but b asically you pay the more expensive one of the two

don't think living in the states is a whole lot cheaper as well, it adds up and comes to around the same thing, unless the company you work for covers you for living cost and medical (the most important one)

Car Insurance $80
Rent $400
Food $400
Entertainment $300
Gas $200
Mortgage $300
RRSP $1700
Investment Loan$2600

$6000 per month expenses but I get some money back from the RRSP contribution and the investment loan is interest only so it is tax deductible. The mortgage listed generates cash flow of about $200 so really my expense is around $5800. Phone and all bills are paid for by the company, I am renting at a friend's and I drive a piece of shit.

I am very very aggressive with savings as I have no idea when my good fortune with work may end.

On days off stay home play WoW and never go out. Yes life is boring but at least you save a lot of money.

But is this how you want to look back on your life? Do you really want money to dictate the experiences that life brings to offer?

Don't drive and you'll save a lot of money and headache. Live as close to work as possible to save on time. I am on a student budget and manage to save a bit every month and I feel much freer by not having a car. :D
