ask yourself this one question "will i be using this in a week?"

jpoon 01-06-2009 10:58 PM

what i do is i carry a money clip with me on some days where I want to limit myself to however much i want to spend.

ex. going clubbing.

falcon 01-06-2009 11:40 PM

the only problem I have is buying car parts. I browse the RX7 classifieds all day at work. Usually for stuff I really don't need.

Other than that, I leave my CC's at home and keep all my money on an "e-savings" account only accessible by online banking. Then I just keep a float of $100 on my debit and that usually good for gas/food for the day.

The_AK 01-06-2009 11:43 PM

whats wrong with my suggestion?
lol

SuperSlowSS 01-07-2009 12:03 AM

aim higher... stuff you can't afford

snowball 01-07-2009 12:06 AM

psychologically you could just tell yourself you're planning to use the money to buy something bigger, like a car (even if you're really not going to) and you'll naturally keep setting money aside for "imagined savings"

another way is just create a budget for yourself, every month allocate a certain amount of money that you're allowed to use on "useless impulse buys" and limit yourself to it.

StaxBundlez 01-07-2009 01:25 AM

yoooo DUDE.. i know exactly what u mean.. im such a whore for buying shit.. i dont even think..i dont know what it is... its a 2 second decision! BAM! drop 1200 on shit and bounce... i like new things lol..

00EM1 01-07-2009 04:39 AM

Get a second job when your working you cant spend money
except when I worked the afternoon shift at lordco and spent more money on ebay than I made

welfare 01-07-2009 05:21 AM

first thing; don't browse. at all. browsing leads to buying.
read a book or something. there are many things you can do that are free that will occupy your thoughts in a positive manner. sometimes i'll just give up something. anything. any vice for around a month or so. eating meat. coffee. smoking. etc... just stop cold turkey. it'll give you a healthy sense of empowerment, discipline, patience. discipline is like a muscle that takes time and effort to strengthen. it's all just mind over matter

Vansterdam 01-07-2009 06:34 AM

I have a shopping and a gambling habit.

Seriously, i'd rather use the money and buy stuff instead. Atleast the $$$ is not all gone in an hour.

You need to stop gambling bro. Just buy stuff if you have the urge to spend money.

+1 for both tactics

I'm not much of an impulse buyer but when I do, I usually wait it out. If I still feel the urge a few weeks later, or even a few months, then I'd seriously start looking again. Otherwise, the urge just subsides the next day.

And with budgeting, I have automatic withdraw setup so my bank does all the work for me. I set aside 40-50% of my paycheck each month for the place I may or may not purchase in the future. That leaves me floating just above the minimal limit in my account so I don't have to pay any fees yet still enough to get by day-to-day.

Looking back, I've been doing pretty good. Most of my impulse buys is only food now. But even then, I try to cook at home instead of eating out.

cut out your vagina and grow a pair of testicles.

Hheidi 01-07-2009 01:22 PM

put your cards in a tub of water and freeze it
so when you feel the urge to spend you would have to break though all the ice to get it:D

bossxx 01-07-2009 01:45 PM

I have this problem as well. I honestly thing it's like a "problem" lol. It's funny because I am looking right now to buy a 25.5" monitor that I don't necessarily need. I am probably going to buy it friday after work. I have already talked to someone about buying my 20".

Somedays I agree that I just have to buy something. It's kind of weird. I can usually catch these feelings now when I realize what I am doing. Sometimes I will just buy clothes because it's the weekend. What a shitty excuse.

I dunno. I think the best thing to do is like what someone else mentioned. It's finding a second job so that you can't honestly find the time to spend shit on. That is of course if your second job means you are NOT sitting on the computer in which case defeats the entire purpose because of online shopping.

Last month I was working 8am-12am so I had literally no time to do anything. It was fantastic because my account doesn't take a beating but your body/ brain sure does from working those hrs.

saiko 01-07-2009 02:03 PM

If you ever have the urge to buy something, think about how many hours of work you have to do inorder to afford it or make the money back.

I use that all the time when I'm in the urge to by stuff. Ie.) Something that's ~$500 that's almost a full two weeks of p/t work. Is it worth it? Or should you wait for a different time.

However, another bad thing I encounter is.. It's only $500, I'll make that back in two weeks, but during the two weeks I can enjoy using this thing and be a somewhat happier person.
