PORT ANGELES - A 16-year-old Port Angeles woman is in custody for first degree murder after she allegedly drowned her newborn infant in a toilet then disposed of the body with her father’s help.
The body of a baby boy was found Monday afternoon by officials searching through 60 tons of trash at a dump site near Tacoma.
Port Angeles Police Chief Terry Gallagher told The Associated Press the body was found about 2:10 p.m. Monday, three days after the investigation began.
Gallagher says forensic tests are planned, and DNA results to establish the infant's parentage may not be available for weeks.
The girl was arrested Friday after a neighbour reported seeing a dead baby in a garbage can. A judge set her bail Monday at $500,000.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge Ken Williams also set bail for Ronald Last Jr. at $10,000.
In court documents, Port Angeles police wrote that after being born on Tuesday, the baby was held face down in a toilet by his young mother until he drowned.
The body was put in a plastic bag and placed in a trash can outside, the documents said. The trash was picked up the next day.
The garbage from Wednesday was in two containers that were taken by the Port Angeles city contractor to a site in Graham, about eight miles southeast of Tacoma in Pierce County.
The garbage containers were intercepted before they could be emptied at a transfer station in Tacoma and were taken to Graham, where there was more room to use heavy machinery to help comb through the contents, Gallagher said.
The mother has another hearing on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Last will be arraigned in Clallam County Superior Court on Friday at 9 a.m. He is being held on investigation on felony charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of methamphetamine, and a misdemeanor charge of concealing birth.
Defense attorney John Hayden petitioned the judge to lower the state's bail recommendation. "I think $5,000 would be more appropriate," Hayden said.
In addition to the bail, Williams placed a no contact order on Last. "So I'm to have no contact with my daughter?" he asked.
"For the time being," Williams responded.
Gallagher said that a woman came to the police station Friday and said she had seen a baby in a trash can in an alley behind the young woman’s house, but the can was empty when officers arrived.
He said investigators believe the girl delivered the baby at the home. She was provided with medical care before she was incarcerated.
