Exclamation BYD F3 Hybrid coming to the U.S. within 2 years.

BYD to present world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle in Detroit
Posted Fri Jan 9 2009 9:12 PM by Jeremy Weber

Chinese manufacturer BYD is planning to have plug-in hybrid vehicles on sale in the U.S. within two years, with similar ambitions for the European market. The company took a step closer to reaching those goals by launching the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle in China last month, and now it has confirmed that the car will be on display at next week’s Detroit Auto Show.

The car is the F3DM and it can drive up to 62 miles on electrical power alone before a small internal combustion engine takes over driving duties. Its battery can fully charge in nine hours from a regular electrical outlet, or much faster at BYD's own charging stations. Driving the wheels is BYD’s own proprietary Dual Mode (DM) plug-in hybrid system and advanced Fe lithium-iron battery technology.

On sale in China priced at 150,000 yuan ($22,000), BYD plans to sell the locally-built plug-in hybrid in the U.S. market by 2010. The move is backed by a $230 million investment from one of the world's richest men, Warren Buffett, and should help it overcome any development hitches presented by tough U.S. safety laws. The investment came from a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, of which Buffett is the majority shareholder.

According to BYD's exports general manager, the company is "talking to some third-party consulting and engineering companies to get a thorough understanding of the safety standards" in the U.S., which will be integral in the vehicle's success into breaking into the U.S. market.

BYD is predicting that initial sales of the car will top 500 units per month in China and will eventually reach 2,000 sales per month by next year.

The F3DM sedan won’t be the only advanced vehicle on BYD’s stands at next week’s event. The carmaker also plans to showcase a new all-electric crossover dubbed the e6.

likey likey.

'coz when you drive it, it'll start to break down, and you will be replacing prone-to-breakdown parts with Made In Japan NZE121 Corolla parts.

Soon you'd have a manual transmission hybrid Corolla for realz for fraction of the price of Prius! LOL.

EDIT: oh fuck me it's $22000? Fuck that shit. I thought it'd be cheap and cheerful like $8000.

I know...I drove a then-brand new '03 Civic Hybrid 5spd and it was awesome.

hk2000: $22k for a hybrid is a relative steal...I mean that's a good 5-6K under anything Honda/Toyota offer...

but then the effects of the hybrid system they developed will still require some testing....

a 9V battery powering a small electric motor in a Hummer isn't a hybrid.

Just for the fact that it's built by some oddball sweatshop in bumfuck, SiFutLung province in China it should be 5-6k cheaper...

then there's the cheaper material going into that sweatshop factory. Add to that the ZERO R&D in design and aerodynamics department because Toyota did all that for them...

I'd pay them $5000 for a brand new car that looks like that, and today is my generous day.

lolz, face it, we ARE gonna be flooded with Chinese cars. Majority of the population just treat cars like a mode of transportation, they will take wutever that's the cheapest.

More like one of those European siblings of the Aygo.... and then got an Aygo front end.

F3R is more like the Hyundai something from a while back.

i didn't read all of this thread but did toyota give BYD the rights to use this old-gen toyota design, or is it just another blatant copy?

if it's a copy, i don't see how they could sell that in north america since it would run into so many copyright, trademark, whatever laws?

^ it's called rebadging...
toyoto provides (or sells) parts and technical support to them...and they sell the car.

similar to Lotus bought celica engine for the Elise
