Need help from people who is working or worked for a gas station

Hi All,

I am doing some research on gas station retailers. I need to know the mark up of the items that they offer:

What is the mark up on gas?

I guess the majority of the candy bars and such are all standard.

What are the peak times of operation?

When / Who does the price change decisions? is there a strategic time for any changes to be made?

Thanks for all your help.

I was a manager at Chevron before, so I hope this helps.

Peak times are mostly in the afternoon around 4/5 ish

Early mornings have a good rush sometimes since a lot of people fill up before work.

I'm not sure of the markup on gas, but the retailer of the station makes squat on the gas itself. Since the gas belongs to the head office, they are pretty much loaning the gas to the stations and the station gets a very small percentage of it.

The profits in a station are the in-store sales, such as candy etc. Cigarettes make a lot of $$.

The price drops are usually determined by surveying near by gas stations. I have no clue who drops first, but when we figure out they drop, we call it into head office, and they will eventually page us and inform us to change the price.

It usually drops late afternoon/early evening and usually goes back up around 10/11 pm.

Mind you, this was in 2005/2006. I'm not sure how things have changed since then etc.

gas markup is around 2-3 cents for the station owner. maybe a bit more now, that was back when it was 50-60 cents

stations get called to change prices. probably from a head office somewhere, it's not up to the station.
