even after paying stuff such as the lease/salaries and such, that's a lot of money.

especially for doctors who run a practice together. my doctor has a practice with 3 other doctors and he's making 400k by himself.

Which office are you talking about?

I remember he had an office around the Broadway/Commercial area...that office was ghetto as fuck!

His W. Broadway location now is much nicer but man the parking and traffic there is horrible.

the one on broadway, everything was wooden, the benches, the front desk... and I agree with you, parking is a pain!

if they make $300,000.
Subtract $60K for receptionist. $24,000 (2,000x12months) for lease/rent. Utilities $2400 ($200x12) minus $25,000 for other misc.

You're still pulling in almost $190K.

Then deduct 55% for tax....

tonyvu 01-16-2009 12:12 AM

wow, i'm suprised... my mom told my doctor to take a vacation back to vietnam and he was all like i need to save up some money first, and here i see him making over 400gs hahah

canucksfan 01-16-2009 12:44 AM

Hahaha this is some sweet info, totally forgot that my doctors are balling as fuck. But yea, they do have high expenses to take care of such as rent and wages for nurses, and get taxed up the ass.

G Hawk 01-16-2009 12:44 AM

Most of the doctors billing over 1 mill are ophthalmologists. They're called the cataract cowboys, and can do high numbers of the expensive procedure per year. All these people on MSP are fee-for-service docs, meaning docs that charge for procedure or family physicians.

Doctors make high incomes on paper, but don't forget about the massive overhead needed by certain types of practices. Med equipment is REDICULOUSLY expensive as is rent at a good location. Add on staff salaries and the fact that docs are taxed at the maximum bracket.... what is it... 43%? The number brought home isn't as big as you thought anymore

Please and thanks. No luck trying myself!

Some people are not really working on a full time basis. Some of the doctors that work in my hospital. They were making like 44k... 37K... but they are probably doing something else on the side.

Dont forget... Its probably not as significant here in Canada. But cost to practice (ie insurance if you screw up) is pretty significant as well.

But yeah you're right... some of them are lucky if they clear 2/3's of it. There are other ways to play with your income too since they're all pretty much self employed. They can write off a lot of their 'expenses'.

239, 000. Maybe that is why I love my doctor so much. So easy to get an appointment whenever I want, and they don't accept new clients.

hahah, because none exists, we bill our clients directly, not some government plan.

Ulic Qel-Droma 01-16-2009 05:15 AM

rb 01-16-2009 05:26 AM

haha this reminds of a Chris Rock line - “My next door neighbor is a dentist — just a regular, yank-your-teeth dentist. I had to host the Oscars to get my f------ house!”

achiam 01-16-2009 06:21 AM

The true figure will be somewhat higher. The standard vehicle injury analysis report billed to ICBC is around $600 for just one patient alone, and that isn't billed to MSP....

Specialists also earn other sources of income too. They are leaders in their field and are at the cutting edge; therefore they are frequently hired as consultants (e.g. Dr X is a corneal specialist, an instrument company is designing some specialized machine for a tiny part of the eye, and asks him for his opinion for X$).
