interesting concept to create revenue. Is there a way to generate funds that would not require the members of RS getting e-mail or text message spam?

Adbot (and I'm assuming SkinnyPuppy is controlling it), these kind of ads are not the ones you want to be associating Revscene with. It shouldn't take a little bit more than a small amount of common sense to vet ads, and not have ones that trick your users into putting their cellphone number in and getting charged a fee they weren't expecting. And these services are well known for ignoring cancellation messages and continuing to charge the person on the other side, see all the ringtones advertising on MuchMusic / MTV.

These threads sponsored by RS make me want to never come back. Suckering RS loyal members to go and get duped for spam txt messages (which are close to impossible to cancel as some of you may find out) to make a few bucks is questionable quality. Making a thread asking for donations would get you more and I would even consider chipping in.

Yes, the consumer should read and be aware of what they're getting into - however, both you and I know this is not the case, and these types of site prey on that fact.
Most people who aren't internet or technology savvy aren't going to know what's going on. With online forms everywhere asking for your phone number or email address, it's almost instinct to just type it in not knowing what exactly is going to happen with your information. Although it's not technically a scam, it's not far from it.
I'm aware of the fact that RS costs money to maintain, and that the admin/management shouldn't have to shell out of their pocket to maintain this site, but I'm sure there are less shady ways of raising revenue than resorting to what Adbot is doing.

If this type of ad (with cellphone input) is getting this type of reaction, I'm sure we won't be seeing much like it anymore. So don't worry about it.

3) Just because someone put their cell # in doesn't mean they were "duped"

If Adbot indeed is moderator/admin approved, then management really needs to take a real hard look at what products it is promoting. So far, it's been an SMS scheme that hits you $5/week for spam SMS, a work from home pyramid scheme and hard sell time shares that Adbot has been promoting - all of them fairly well known (in a bad way) type of businesses that a legitimate site shouldn't be promoting.
They might be shelling out big bucks for referrals, which I guess is good for RS, but this may be at the expense of RS's members. As much as I want RS to get some decent revenue, it sucks to see RS members also get burned by these somewhat shady businesses.
If RS wants to advertise, then I would suggest looking at your demographic (mostly 20-30's tech savvy car enthusiasts) and target advertising that's relevant to them rather than picking random schemes that most people would call "scams". This current wave of advertising is just leaving a bad taste in people's mouths and could potentially be driving away your reader base.

The real IQ test isn't the test, but it's the end, where if you put your real cell number in, you're an idiot.
If you procceeded and put in your real email, you're an idiot.

ADBOT acknowledges that many Revscene users do not wish to see the type of advertising that involved cell phone numbers.
This issue is considered closed.
