Face-to-face friendships in decline Our friendship networks are shrinking, a mounting body of evidence suggests, a social erosion that's linked to factors ranging from longer work hours to a population on the move. Warning! long read! http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/n...d06151&k=19034 |
I agree. After you graduate high school, you lose some friends. |
being on RS 24/7 contributes to that greatly. |
blame the interweb. |
i read it on the paper. We don't really lose friends, but lose contact after graduation and once our career kicks in. Then new people tag along from work. |

I have noticed this aswell. After graduation, My friends crowd dwindled. I now only hangout with a handful of HS friends. Family, work, cousins and g/f take up majority of my time...Childhood friends will never go away..you just have a mutual thing about silence for a few months or years.....then you hangout again once in awhile..... Then theres getting married...boys does that ever kill your hanging out with the boys time. |
that's not really a bad thing. in highschool, you're with the same age people all the time, and you have a lot more spare time + less responsibilities |
saw this comin loong time ago... gd read tho |
A couple years, maybe 2 or so after graduation tells you who your real friends from hs are. |
yea, after highschool, i barely see anyone I used to chill with. Maybe only like 1-2 contacts left from highschool. |

Fairly similar here... I haven't met any really close friends in university or from work... my closest bunch of friends are still from high school, which was ten years ago... |
in highschool we had a group of 11 girls now it's down to 6 of us. people say that at the end of the "day," you'll be able to count your true friends on one hand |
i dont have many friends anymore most of them moved away or i just dont talk to anymore |
I only hang around a few people from hs, have met many new people but only a few that I actually hang out with. I hang out with some of my co workers every now and then. I miss my "big" group of friends :( oh well thats life |
. |
I have literally 1 friend left from HS, well, actually from elementary school. Best friend since grade 5, so it's been 11 years.. and yes, sometimes we go a month or 2 without talking but it's never awkward after. You just know your lives and priorities are different and appreciate the time you do get to spend together between busy schedules. All my other close-ish friends I met via previous jobs after HS. |
Hehe. 90% of HS and Uni friends are more like acquaintances. Really, aside from seeing them at school and maybe the odd study session, how often would you really call them up and just hang out? When you're in H/S or Uni you're "all the same" and you always have a regular time and place where you see each other. RL is a bit different -- but you guys have nailed it -- the people who you actually take an effort to contact every once in a while are your friends. You make time for each other. I think things really really change once you get shacked up (change a bit) or married and have kids (changes a lot - life focus changes completely). Article probably refers more to this than the hs/uni crossover. |
lol.. Im still close with 6 friends from Elementary and 4 from highschool... known the 6 friends for about 13years?.. pretty sure unless one of them dies were gona be friends for aloooooong time XD. |
it's all about proximity.... in highschool, you're always with them, no matter what. After graduation, people go to different schools or different faculties and odds are you rarely see them after. Unless everybody is willing to sacrifice their time (because all know not everybody will have the same schedule or time off) chances are you are going to see those people less and less. |
I miss hs, it'll be 10 years this june since I gradded. |
Your friends changes so what you had in common back then may not apply today. However, the friends you loose will most likely be replaced by new friends from work or so on so I don't think you are really loosing face-to-face friendships. |
facebook and msn contribute to this problem most of the time i overhear people in real life saying "write on my wall" "talk to you on msn" instead of holding actual conversations |
while in highschool..you had friends..well...everyone in your grade is basically a "friend". once i graduated, i only see my REAL friends, the ones who get together almost nightly to hang out for a beer, go to clubs, the real friends..but those that were lost after highschool are being replaced by work friends..im not complaining though. im perfectly happy actually. |
