Talking 820hp GT-R

South Side Performance releases 820hp GT-R upgrade
Posted Fri Jan 16 2009 5:19 PM by Viknesh Vijayenthiran

South Side Performance claims its kit delivers more power at lower boost pressure than a stock GT-R

America’s South Side Performance, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, has released for the first time a new tuning kit for the R35 Nissan GT-R supercar, which the company claims is capable of delivering 820hp (612kW) at the crankshaft. The new kit is based around a custom turbocharger upgrade that exhibits greater efficiency and faster spooling than the stock set-up. This efficiency means that owners will be able to run lower boost than the stock GT-R yet still achieve more power.

South Side Performance has chosen a pair of bolt-on Garrett ball bearing turbochargers for its kit. They require only one line to be changed and can be properly installed with basic tools and equipment.

The turbos were specifically designed to bring bigger power at lower boost and to utilize the fastest spooling compressors available for the size and application. The result is a turbo that makes more power at stock boost levels and starts making boost at lower RPM's than in the standard GT-R. The end result is more output lower in the power band.

The kit retails for $6,499 but requires owners to exchange their stock turbos. The price includes machining each of the stock turbos and installation of an upgraded actuator, 53.8mm turbine wheel, and 68mm high pressure billet aluminum compressor wheel which is efficient up to 32psi. The whole process takes about a week.

And the tranny will be good for one launch control if you're lucky.

1. Company claims 820hp at crank.
2. $6,500 gets you bigger turbos with no supporting changes (internals, TRANNY).
3. Saving grace would've been at least a PICTURE of the car, which isn't shown.

Fail.

This is awesome if it does what they say it does. That low end power promise might take away the need to use launch control...like it's needed anyways in the first place.

The tranny can handle the power fine assuming you don't launch the car. Besides, there are already upgrades for the transmission on the GTR to harness the upgraded power.

You mean like the countless fanboys who appeared in every single thread in pretty much every forum there is when a 911, Z06 or ZR1 was the topic just so they could say "GTR is fastar, yo"?

No, what I'm sick of is the people who keep posting these shops that "apparently" have built these "crazy" cars that have zero fundamentals. If the car is known for tranny issues, wouldn't you think that the first thing for the company to do is to do some sort of tranny upgrade to signal to the public that they're trying to make a car that's not going to be completely useless?

Care to tell us who has these upgrades and what exactly they do to the tranny to make it stronger?

Funny how Nissan can't make the tranny stronger, but some small aftermarket company can?

I'm curious to see how this goes. Haltech (read: serious tuning house) managed to have one come apart during testing at about 650hp:

http://www.gtr.co.uk/forum/108085-oh...ine-blown.html

Quote:
Haltech R35 GTR Skyline had a catastrophic blow up on Friday the 24th if October. Our GTR has been running on a new platform of Haltech engine management flawlessly for over 5000km's now.

The car was being track tested at Eastern Creek raceway
(Eastern Creek International Raceway - Australia) when the engine let go. The car had completed countless flat out laps with the engine producing 400kw at the wheels, up from 300kw at the wheels - The driver tells me it was a terrific ride!

After finishing Haltech's latest Flat shifting calibrations a few more test laps had to be carried out. With no sign of trouble the car went out and successfully completed 2 more laps before finishing up on the side of the track leaving a trail of oil and plume of smoke behind it.

It was time to put it in the trailer and go back to the workshop to pull it down. After building up enough courage our in-house mechanic
removed the VR38DETT from the car and set it up on the engine stand.
A few hours later the engine was fully stripped and the damage to the engine was clear - It appears Haltech have found the limits of Nissans new super car!
The engine had met its maker.

Piston #1 and #3 had separated from their lower halves right through the center of the gudgeon pin. As the Conrod's had no piston's to guide them up and down the bore they started smashing the bore, block, oil pump, sump and anything else that got in their way.

Due to the massive damage to the block we will need to replace it. And figure it's a great time to make the engine a little stronger. We will be boring the motor out and installing Darton sleeves, replacing the factory cast pistons with a study Forged unit as well as installing a set of Billet conrods. This should allow the engine to reliably produce
over 400Kw at the wheels and handle the pressure.

Fail.
After looking at the V-Spec version, it just might be saving grace that a picture wasn't provided for this one.

The upgrade is for the gears, the important one is first gear since that's the one you launch with.

"Australian gearbox gurus Pfitzner Performance Gearboxes (PPG) have completed their first Nissan GT-R GR6 gearbox upgrades in the form of a drop in first gear replacement. You can see it pictured about sitting next to a standard GR6 first gear.

You can tell just by looking at this picture the basics of this upgrade, a much wider gear to increase strength. The main cause of gearbox failures occurs on the teeth of the first gears after extreme stress. Initially fractures develop and eventually teeth give way. Once one tooth is gone the rest follow like dominoes.

To follow on from this, PPG plan some gear upgrades for big horsepower cars as well as a 1st through 4th gear upgrade set. "
