They use different fuel, but it all comes from the same crude. Price of crude goes up... price of fuels distilled from it goes up.

Nope. Jet fuel is a derivative of Diesel. Just FAR cleaner.

And we all know diesle has a very low octane, and that's the point.

Automotive oil cannot legally be used in aero engines, not matter how good it is (if not better).

i always presumed that jet fuel is what they use in "jet fighters/jets", hence the term. is that what they call the fuels they use in say... a 747 too?
Yes, jet fuel is used in many many types of aircraft.

Anything with a turbine: Most helicopters, turbo-prop aircraft (they dont have turbos), and traditional "jet" engine aircraft like a 747 or private jet.

It is also used in new Diesel engines that are appearing in smaller general aviation aircraft.

As for aviation gasoline. The most widely available grade is 100 Low lead. I do not recommend running your modern 02 sensor equiped car on this stuff. It may say Low Lead, but it has 2x the amount of lead/L as LEADED automotive gas.

Nasty stuff, when it evaporates - and it evaporates very quickly, it leaves a white dry film.. i think this is the tetraethyl lead?

Avgas is also more dangerous than Automotive gas or "mogas" because its easier to ignite.

EDIT: as for pricing

Avgas used to be about as cheap as mogas. now its a good 50 cents more on average. Over the course of this past summer, some locations were advertising 100LL at over $2.00/L

The retail price also doesn't fluctuate like mogas does. Although the "Rack" usually changes daily. This means the rack may go down a few cents, but that doesn't mean you'll see it in the retail price or "posted price". Although you can expect to see the change if it goes up by more than a few cents
