Slow Network Speed PC: Wired MAC: Wireless Router: Linksys WRT54GL flashed with DD-WRT Transfer speed from PC -> MAC: 5-6 Mbps I should be getting somewhere in the neighbourhood of over 20Mbps.. What's wrong? |
wireless signals can be slowed down by the distance it takes me forever to send stuff through wireless best thing is to transfer by wired |
Nothing is "wrong". That's just the real world speed. |
Well, the laptops is right next to my router and i can only send between 5-6mbps on "G" mode.. it should be much faster than that? |
like invisible said its the real actually speed and not theoretical speed that they advertise if your right next to the router you might as well plug it in |
What's the connect speed? What are you using for encryption? |

I tried transferring 2 files simultaneously from my PC to my MAC via wireless, and I'm still drawing the same speed. I think my router is bottlenecking the speed. Is anyone familiar with DD-WRT? perhaps there are some settings in there that I should take a look at? Quote:
100Mbps for Wired PC I'm using AES Encryption for WiFi. |

I think you are confused with the bits with the Bytes. |

Anyways, okay... real world speed for 802.11g can be as high as 22-26Mb/s... but there could be so many factors that can cause it to be slower. Nobody's going to be able to tell you with any confidence that a particular reason is behind it. The only way you can even begin to investigate is to do a whole bunch of tests. Try using different PCs and laptops to see if the speed is any different. Maybe try changing the channel that your wifi is operating on. |
if you dont like the speed bump it up to wireless N or get the ethernet over powerline? where you can plug in a module to any pwoer outlet and get net that way |
20mbps does not mean your downloading or uploading speed.... the 20mbps that you see is the signal strength from the W router to your comp.... If you want to check your real speed Pls Click the link and click speed meter on the top Cheers hope it helps |
BTW let me know what is the statistics that shows on the speed meter test.... Mine is Like 5MBs max is 8MBs.... I'm Using shaw High speed+ booster ($2.50 shaw add-on) FTW |

and Yes, I have tried changing channels, the speed didn't change at all. |
Well, you could try testing other equipment to get an idea if it's one component (PC, router, or Mac) that's causing the slowness. |

dell desktop PC: wired download speed 1.91 Mb/s upload speed 10.96Mb/s ping 120ms acer revo: wireless download speed 0.38Mb/s upload speed 0.55Mb/s ping 73ms router: Linksys WRT54GL (one week old) provider: uniserve DSL 3.0 this is my first time dealing with a wifi connection, and as you can see it hasn't gone well. i don't even think dialup is this slow :( help? |
Step 1: Connect your stupid Mac using a wire to see the actual speed Step 2: Restore your router to default setting and test the wireless speed If shit doesn't work, make sure your windows setting is correct. Step 3: Test the wireless speed with security and encryption options Step 4: Try other wireless devices and test the speed. |
