PC: Wired

Router: Linksys WRT54GL flashed with DD-WRT
Transfer speed from PC -> MAC: 5-6 Mbps

wireless signals can be slowed down by the distance
it takes me forever to send stuff through wireless
best thing is to transfer by wired

Nothing is "wrong". That's just the real world speed.

What's the connect speed? What are you using for encryption?

if your right next to the router you might as well plug it in | Well, the notebook is right next to me for testing purposes, usually the laptop is all over the house, but it seems like no matter where my notebook is, all im getting is 5-6Mbps over wireless. That frustrates me because I'm having trouble streaming a regular DivX movie.
I tried transferring 2 files simultaneously from my PC to my MAC via wireless, and I'm still drawing the same speed. I think my router is bottlenecking the speed. Is anyone familiar with DD-WRT? perhaps there are some settings in there that I should take a look at? Quote:

I'm using AES Encryption for WiFi.

I think you are confused with the bits with the Bytes.

I think you are confused with the bits with the Bytes. | Well, no I'm not. Believe me, I'm one of the people who would never confuse talking about Mb/s and MB/s.
Anyways, okay... real world speed for 802.11g can be as high as 22-26Mb/s... but there could be so many factors that can cause it to be slower. Nobody's going to be able to tell you with any confidence that a particular reason is behind it.
The only way you can even begin to investigate is to do a whole bunch of tests. Try using different PCs and laptops to see if the speed is any different. Maybe try changing the channel that your wifi is operating on.

20mbps does not mean your downloading or uploading speed.... the 20mbps that you see is the signal strength from the W router to your comp.... If you want to check your real speed Pls Click the link and click speed meter on the top
Cheers hope it helps

Cheers hope it helps | No. You can see up to 54Mb/s as your theoretical connection speed between your wireless adapter and the router, but even if you're connected at 54Mb/sec, it doesn't mean you can actually transfer data that fast over that connection. The best real world transfer speed you can achieve over 802.11g is 22-26Mb/s, but usually it's probably quite a bit less than that.

What kind of interference can be causing this? I don't really understand.
and Yes, I have tried changing channels, the speed didn't change at all.

Well, you could try testing other equipment to get an idea if it's one component (PC, router, or Mac) that's causing the slowness.

Step 1: Connect your stupid Mac using a wire to see the actual speed
Step 2: Restore your router to default setting and test the wireless speed
If shit doesn't work, make sure your windows setting is correct.
Step 3: Test the wireless speed with security and encryption options
Step 4: Try other wireless devices and test the speed.
