Anybody know how to Mahjong?
 

the one with the 4 players. It looks really fun but can you play without knowing any chinese?

You don't need to know chinese to play it but it helps (there's a "set" of tiles that use chinese numbers 1-9).

i read on wikipedia but it so confusing
anybody have any thing with more simplified instructions.

To make a set... get your friends to teach you, its much easier that way

its not very hard, you got 14 tiles, you want to make 4 sets of 3, and then a pair, when you win.

sets can be consecutive of the same suit, or a triple. and a pair thats the same. ta da!

or go for higher combo's

technically you wouldn't need to know any Chinese to play,
but to be able to react fast enough, probably.

don't read online tutorials; that's like trying to learn how to drive watching videos on youtube.

^^ yes theres something called mahjong courtesy...don't only do "chicken" you'll be hated quite quickly.

Give that a read. The "chow" is consecutive tiles (1,2,3 or 4,5,6 etc..). The "pong" is three of a kind (1,1,1 or 2,2,2 etc..). The "kong" is four of a kind. That link gives you an idea on scoring, which is kinda important. The actual playing rules are simple, you just need to be taught in person cause it's alot easier to understand than reading.

well i guess if you're winning good money from it then it shouldn't be that boring

chicken = fast way of making some money if u really want to win for sure
fast game = more games to win

To avoid chicken, just set the game to 三番 ("3 fan" or "san fan") at least.

i try not to, but obviously we set the ground rules first. if no chicken allowed, then no chicken allowed!

and there is mahjong on yahoo... not the one where you gotta match the tiles to rid the screen, but actually live mahjong that you can play w/ others.

chicken is for losers.. we play 五番 penalty for eating that.
