I would say the problem has been resolved last week with a firmware update. If you have one of these drives, you should update your fimware. You can find the update at Seagate. If you care to read more (50+ pages) browse the Seagate forums. Has anyone here experiences a bricking problem at boot time? |
st31500341as sata 1.5tb no problems. dunno if i wanna upgrade firmware seeing how things are good as is. edit: both my drives are on the list, however inputting my serial number on the checker showed update was not needed. Oh well. |
yes, I have returned 2 of my seagate HDs (250 and 500) last year. the service center said something about the faulty control arm that causes weird ticking noise. Go look it up on the web, I have found many users complained the same issue. Don't think it's the firmware... |
man ~ I just hope nothing happen to those Seagate drives. I have total over 20 TB of data my server rack.... |
There is a firmware update for the baracuda drives... Article http://www.computerworld.com/action/...&intsrc=kc_top Seagate link: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/cr...p?DocId=207931 |

My drive ST37500330AS on SD15 firmware apparently is one of the affected models. I've been running on this drive for about a year now with no issues. Updated the firmware anyways just to be safe. I've never really had any major issues with Seagates - I've only ever had to RMA one drive (a 250GB drive) that I was using in an external enclosure. I suspect however that it may have been heat related as the enclosure got unusually warm when it was powered up for a period of time. I've had to say that I've returned more WD's that I have Seagates. |

I've also read many complaints with the 7200.11 barracudas. I think the 1TB drives are fine though. Quote:

I was looking into the Seagate HDD's, and heard about firmware issues. This really makes my decision clear. Do not buy seagate til they fix this issue. If you read the NCIX forums you'll see TONS of threads about the same issue. |
i thought it was only for 1tb and 1.5tb?? those serial numbers suggest the smaller capacity drives are in it too? what other cheap alternatives are there for hard drives now? |

Been running my seagate for over a year now. So far so good. Originally had AD14 firmware. Updated to SD1A just to be safe. Supposidly the new firmware fixes the problems. |

You can download their Seatools app to find out what model and firmware you have if you don't want to bust your case open. |
Just enter the serial number to check if your drive is okay or not http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/cr...p?DocId=207931 |
I bought a 500GB seagate barracuda last year. Every once in awhile it'll make weird noises. I barely use it anyways, I only turn it on if I want to transfer a large amount of stuff from my regular HD to free up space. Still loving my 320GB. I'd buy several more if I wanted to. |

Both the Samsung and Western Digital Drives are selling for less than the Seagate. Samsung Spinpoint 1TB: $118 - http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...I&promoid=1015 WD Caviar Green 1TB (slower drive, though): $122 - http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...D&promoid=1015 Seagate 1TB: $125 - http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...e&promoid=1015 Out of the ones above, i'd pick the Samsung. WD Green series isn't their performance line. |
The Samsung Spinpoint F1 series has had a number of documented failures as well. |
too bad maxtor went down, i loved my maxtor drives. NONE of them failed on me. |
