got pwnd by steering wheel lock
 

thought i would share my epic fail with everyone... hopefully no one will end up like me :cry:

went out saturday and bought a new steering wheel lock from canadian tire. about $40 after taxes for a 4-hook master with pushbutton lock.

got home, tried it on the wheel, and locked it. sunday morning got called to work and found out that the key didn't work for the &*%@#! lock.

called every locksmith in my area in the yellow pages. kept being told everyone was busy and i would need to wait until the following day. finally found a place in coquitlam that would come out to me in n. bby in 30 minutes. locksmith confirms that the keys don't match the lock. he tried picking it but had an emergency job come over the phone and couldn't waste any more time... so out came the drill. took less than 10 seconds to get it off. i don't feel so safe anymore :eek:

total cost: $95 for the locksmith+$40 approx for the lock, meant $135 out of pocket, not including the 1/2 day's work i missed.

went to where i bought it and they won't compensate me for my losses. basically took my contact info down and said maybe a manager or someone from head office might contact me.... sigh.

so in conclusion, don't be an idiot like me and test the keys before using.

Send the bill to the company as well for getting the lock chopped off.

There's really nothing you can buy that will prevent theft of your vehicle. They're all theft deterrent products that make you feel more secure when you purchase them.

doubt it... i used to work for Canadian Tires... they going to just be like fuck it cause my managers used to do that..

yeah i pretty much got that feeling from the manager that day, who just went through the motions to get me to go away before calling the cops on me because i was so pissed off.

the thing was made by master lock... i thought it was a competent company.now i know better.

Well it also lures thief's away since they can see it.
When they look for a car to break into, they look for something that's worth breaking into, and is the easiest.
Even if it delays them by only 30-60 seconds, there's a chance somebody would walk/drive by in that time.

The store should have refunded you the cost of the product, given that it was essentially defective. But you'd have a hard time getting the store to pay for your locksmith bill. For that, you'd have to go after the manufacturer.

-edit- on 2nd thought it's probably better the store didn't give you a refund. if they did, then you'd have a difficult time getting any reimbursement from the manufacturer for the locksmith fee. If I were you now, i'd contact the number above, then send them a package with the lock, the keys, and copies of your receipts. Might take a few weeks but you'll probably get your money back. You'd still have to pay for shipping though, unless you can convince them on the phone to send you a box to ship it in. Good luck.

eff-1... argh as i mentioned i already returned it. all i have is a copy of the purchase receipt and an invoice from the locksmith :(

don't be. your reasoning makes sense, but like you said, i just screwed myself even more. called the store manager (the assistant i had to deal with was AWOL) and it's "either gone or misplaced" because he couldn't find it. i called the number for master lock and they told me what you said... i need to ship it to them at my expense and they'll think about it... probably would have cost me more in shipping that it would have buying the accursed thing :rolleyes:

^And if you did ship it back, they'd probably say, "Well of course the keys don't work, the lock's been drilled out!"

its the big bar that attaches to the wheel, sucks they dont sell them anymore

ouch, i feel for ya. i have my steering wheel lock stuck one day (the key got jammed) and I had to go thru the trouble of getting it drilled. Couldnt go after anyone cuz i had it for over 2 years.

Do what my wife does - put the steering wheel lock on, without actually locking it. :rolleyes:

It will still deter thieves, right? :)

Doesn't sound like these steering wheel locks are any good.

Should just buy a long chain and a pad lock and tie the chain around my steering wheel to the passenger door handle and lock it hahahah LOL.

To people worried about it taking 10 seconds to drill out..lock it on backwards, so the keyhole faces the dashboard. Good luck to anyone trying to pick, or drill that one out.

and how would i gain access to the keyhole myself if i do it that way? it would be pressing into the steering wheel hub/airbag :haha:

Hahaha noooo it doesn't....go outside and actually try it you goof!

It's on the other side of the steering wheel, you just have to reach around it now lol

It takes a bit of getting used to, but I can take mine off no problem, with one hand :p

streering wheel lock are point less

most of them you can bend the wheel then remove then bend back when you done your duty and drive off

most comon is hack saw takes like seconds to cut thout streeing wheel
then use brace and eletrical taped it back to gether and drive away


only one's that work are ones that hold the brake pedale in place





and no i don't steal car's just know how
work in wreaking yards for some time

^ For brake pedal lock, can't they just use the hand brake temporarily?
Wouldn't gas/clutch pedal lock be better?
