UBC engineering prank leads to arrests VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's a prank that happens every year, but things didn't go exactly as planned for UBC Engineering students this morning. Five of the them have been arrested and could be facing charges. Just after 4 a.m., Vancouver Police were called to the Second Narrows Bridge after getting calls about a vehicle being lowered off the bridge. Turns out the resourceful engineering students suspended a hollowed out Volkswagen Beetle off the side of the span. Constable Lindsey Houghton says Vancouver Police showed up they arrested the five people and charges of mischief over $5,000 are now being recommended. Highway crews were called out with special cranes, rigging equipment and staff to try and raise the vehicle, but unfortunately the cord suspending the car snapped and the shell has ended up at the bottom of the Burrard Inlet. |
haha my first cousin is in the ubc engineering program I wonder if she got arrested :lol |

pretty priceless I must say |
Fail. I think i'll got bug my engineering friends about this nice pictures |
Na the fail is they should have let the students than knew what they are doing get the car back up. Hmm, Engineering Students or City Workers, it doesn't take much thought on who I'd choose to get something moved. |
Eh, 90% chances they'll walk. VPD and RCMP expect this every year, and it's not like they're damaging anything. Anyone know which dept pulled this one off? :D |
FAIL! |
i always wonder why it takes engineers to hang a empty car shell off a bridge. sounds like something anyone can do as long as they're stupid enough and have the right equipment. |
don't these engineer kids have anything else to do around this time then pull pranks like this ... aren't midterms coming up ? fucking university students still doing pranks liek this wasting valuable police man power to arrest their ass .... then wasting tax payers moneys to take that car off the bridge then haul it away... are these what university kids should be doing ? fucking pathetic |
And I thought they would finally think of something more original this year.... |
hhahah, it was pouring rain yesterday too. I'd rather stay home & wath TV. |

A lot of shit looks real good on paper, unfortunately just doesn’t actually work in real life. Who would I trust? Guys who have been on the job 20+ years, or snot nosed engineer know it alls who havent even graded yet? 20 year vets all the way. I’ve dealt with my fair share of “engineers”, and very few of them have earned my respect. If you havent done it off the drawing board or out side of solid works, you havent done it, period. Get you boots dirty or your knuckles bloody, then Ill listen to you. Until then, let me talk to someone who has actually done what the engineering students and grads talk about doing. |
haha. morons. +1 ^ |

I guess UBC lowered the entrance requirements to their Engineering program :p |
LOL! Well, atleast they still got some camera time. hahaha good or bad. I wonder who narked on them. |
maybe some sfu engineering students |
/fail |
/facepalm |
I hope they get charged good... throwing a few hundred pound object tied to a rope off the side of the bridge takes the knowledge of a 5 year old, not an engineer. go do something usefull, it was funny once. not the 20th time. |
its a competition between engineering faculties during E week (engineering week) at UBC, yes the bug has been done a million times, but its up to a faculty to come up with something which is supposed to be engineering related, its a tradition which UBC is known for. i'd say poor planning must have led to their demise, not sure if they set up enough spotters. |
