I love denny's.

anything below 5 dollars tip for a FREE meal is pretty cheap. The denny's i go to (sw marine) has some of the best service I get in a resteraunt.

Go for another one just before 2pm for a late lunch.

....fatty!

Fawk... I dunno. I was expecting it to have 2 pancakes as well. Oh well, I ain't complaining! *shrugs*

And yeah, based on first-hand experience, two grand slam breakfasts in one morning is bad for your tummy. I already took 2 shits here at work and still feel nauseous. I'm going into a grease coma. brb ( =______= )

Gh0stRider 02-03-2009 01:32 PM

Gtrr33 02-03-2009 01:40 PM

Thanks for the heads up. The Notorious MSG went to the one by Lougheed Mall, only had to wait 10 minutes for a table of 7. Mad props!

The meal would have cost 20 bucks, so I tipped accordingly, plus a bit more, I guess. Not that it's going to make up for all the cheap asses out there, LOL.

It's not the waitresses fault the meal's free. They were courteous and polite, and the food came within two minutes. They must have had the stuff all ready to go.

It was overall a good experience. Rumour has it that the owner of Denny's is a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan........ another rumour has it that with the economy being poor, they wanted to pay their customers back for all the support over the years.

BTW, once was enough for me. I want others to enjoy the deal and not risk making it into something they will never do again because of the problems that arise.

yeah, I just tipped 15% of what the bill wouldve came out normally

Vansterdam 02-03-2009 03:25 PM

InvisibleSoul 02-03-2009 04:03 PM

Three weeks from now, you can go to IHOP and get a free shortstack of pancakes... obviously nowhere as good as a free Grand Slam though. :p

As some people have mentioned, I don't see anything wrong with it either. The servers aren't doing anything different than just serving their meals, and I'm tipping for their service. Besides, the promo of the free breakfast is just a marketing strategy from Dennys, it's not like the servers are giving you free food so I should tip more. How did you get that mentality?

Say for example, an electronics store is offering a $300 pair of speakers for free for the first 200 people in line. If you did manage to get a pair, are you going to pay them $50 just because you feel bad (or to show that you're not "cheap")?

WTF, comparing free stuff at electronic store with free breakfast that has to be served?

PEOPLE rely on TIPS just to get by.
don't forget that. Just watch the intro scene in Resevoir Dogs.
You should definately be tipping at least $3 per person. Especially in Denny's where the tips goes to the kitchen staff where the had to bust their ass off today just to serve you cheapasses some free food.

You dont realize that giving out free breakfast that usually costs $9 during a time of ecnomic downturn is beyond generous.

Might i add the one i went to had a fast moving line and the food came out pretty quick (5mins).

and for people saying they wanna get a raincheck for a FUCKING free breakfast so they can hoard that shit after 2pm or in a few days. WHAT THE FUCK?

don't get a me wrong, i'm a cheap guy and even i tipped $5. But it's fucking free food. if you wanna make raincheck for it you gotta be kidding me.

Some of the replies in this thread pretty much explain why there's so many lowballers on RS.

vicham 02-03-2009 10:38 PM

$9 * 15% = $1.35.....even with drink......~$2 per person should be more than enough.....seriously...I don't really understand why people paid that much. The waiter/waitress just did same amount of work per person and they were not the one who offered the free meal. Why do we have to overpay for the tips when it's their company that is offering the free meal. Besides, they served more people than usual today and most people already paid over 15% tips. I am pretty sure they made more than what they used to today.

Fafine 02-03-2009 10:47 PM

Went to the one on marine around 1130 and it was packed saw couple hs students run there and cars full of ppl going into the parking lot- suprisingly most of them had huge smiles on their faces.

i'm sorry but i gotta weigh in here.

As someone who used to work in the service industry i have to say this:
what would happen if the promotion were not there? Yes you're right about the economic slowdown now and so people will be less prone to go out to eat. So what would happen to those servers? they'll be coming in (provided management doesnt cut shifts) to basically an empty restaurant and get NO tips.

I do not think that the $1 tip is unreasonable. it will amount to basically $10 an hour if this promotion works. That on top of their normal base pay of 8/hr is more than fair.

But it's your money. if you want to give $5 or $10 or $50 tip, that's your decision.

That was exactly the point I was trying to get across and it was stated too. They weren't doing anything different from their everyday work and the company itself was offering the promotion. NOT the servers. It wasn't like they were offering free blowjobs along with the Grand Slams to make your time worth while.

There is no policy stating how much you should or shouldn't be paying. The 10% isn't even mandatory over here in Canada, it's just expected. Just because you paid more than some of us here doesn't mean everyone should.

Hell, I have a feeling it's like you felt you got ripped off and are shaming on us just because we paid less. Nipples also got a good point, it's your money in the end.

I guess I'll go to this one

Hot Karl 02-03-2009 11:55 PM

went to the kingsway one. meal come in like 5 minutes, choice of eggs with 2 large pancakes.

it was brisk but not busy when i went at around 8am. gave a 2.50 tip. can't believe cheap asses would even consider not tipping.

goo3 02-04-2009 12:18 AM

HOW are those pancakes anyway? Worth trying @ regular price?

i think his point was that you should've tipped more than usual for that exact reason. the employees didn't choose to offer the promotion, yet they were the ones busting their asses to make it happen. like he mentioned, the tips also go to the kitchen staff who have to pump out these free meals like an assembly line. not to mention the servers who have to keep everything in order, and i'm assuming it was pretty hectic down there, while making sure everyone is in and out at a reasonable pace. they weren't offering blowjobs, but for the hell i would imagine they were put through, they might as well have.

100% agree

While their service isn't anything out of the ordinary, the amount of customers were. I was there at about 1pm and it was PACKED with a long lineup.

Just tip a little more. No harm in that.
