One man injured in Langley shooting
News1130 Staff LANGLEY (NEWS1130) | Friday, February 6th, 2009 5:19 pm A man is in critical condition after being shot at Langley's Thunderbird Centre, late this afternoon. Witnesses say the driver of the truck was being chased before the shooting.
The primary crime scene has been taped off by police as well as a secondary line has been set up half way through the parking lot.

This News1130 listener says the shooting involved a few vehicles.

"Apparently there were two vans that were chasing this truck and they opened up gunfire on it right in front of the IGA, and I was talking to the girls inside the IGA and they hit the ground."

RCMP are not saying if this was gang related.

The man has been taken to hospital by air ambulance.

I dont think these hits are being done by any of the big gangs. They are smart enough to know that opening fire on someone in a crowded area is not good for business..

METRO VANCOUVER -- A man is in grave condition after another brazen public shooting in the parking lot of a Langley mall shortly after 4 p.m. Friday.

Langley RCMP Const. Holly Marks said police were called to the Thunderbird Mall with reports of shots fired.

They found the victim clinging to life and he is now being transported by air ambulance to a trauma hospital, Marks said.

She said the shooting is shocking given how busy the area is with a mall containing restaurants, an IGA, and other businesses frequented throughout the day and evening.

Nicole Watt was washing tables at the Taco del Mar when she heard what she thought was gunfire.

"I saw a guy running from a van, he ran across with a gun and he just started shooting," said Watt.

A man inside his dark truck was struck by at least two guns, said the waitress, who didn't get a clear look at the shooter's face.

The shooter she saw carried a handgun, while a second man carrying a machine gun was obscured by a pillar outside.

She raced to call 911 before it was even over. A doctor from a neighbouring clinic ran over to aid the victim - a tall, muscular man covered with tattoos.

"They tore out of the parking lot, said Watt. "It is very disturbing. It was right there," she said as she pointed outside.

"People saw both guns dropped in the paqrking lot."

Watt said she understood the victim was chased into the crowded mall parking lot by his assailants in a dark van.

"They stopped, they parked, they ran across the parking lot and they shot him. The parking lot was full. It was ten after four. People were running out of all the businesses to see what happened."

The young mother is shocked and shaken.

"It's a very nice family orientated area of town. It is not where you would connect with something like this."

Lindsay Brand at Elements Sun Spa said she was told that three vehicles cornered a car outside the mall.

“They had machine guns and shot him down.”

Brand said the number of recent shootings is “freaking me out.”

“It’s not like it’s some open-fire maniac. It’s all targeted. But it’s still scary if you get in the way.”

Police have brought in a transit bus to take away witnesses to interview as investigators scour the wet parking lot for bullets.

Shoppers and workers have been unable to get their cars out from behind the yellow tape.

Local NDP MLA Mike Farnworth said the violence is unprecedented.

"This is completely out of control," the critic for solicitor general said after hearing of Langley's shooting.

Heather Mezger, who works at Bosley’s Pet Food store, heard the shots at about 3 pm.

“I had no idea what the sound was. It sounded like a jackhammer.

“And then after about five minutes the police showed up and I thought maybe someone had been hurt at the construction site here.

“But then the firetruck and ambulance came and they started putting up police tape. And then I knew it wasn’t an industrial accident.”

Mezger said the scene at the mall became very chaotic with shoppers being forced by the police to leave the cars in the parking lot.

“It doesn’t seem like something like this would happen here. It’s a very quiet mall.”

A grey pick-up truck with a broken driver's side window sits double-parked in front of the supermarket, cordoned off by police.

Natalie Jones, who works at Extreme Pita, said there was a heavy police presence in the mall by the time she started her late afternoon shift.

“The place was surrounded. There’s helicopters flying above and everything,” said Jones. “Apparently the guy was in pretty serious condition but he was gone by the time I got here.

“People here are pretty freaked out.”

Lisa Swift, who works at the Booster Juice store in the mall, said gangland-shootings are almost becoming commonplace.

“They happen all the time, right? So long as you don’t get caught in the crossfire.

“They’ve happened a few times in the last few days. It’s just the way it is, isn’t it?"

The victim was taken to the Colossus cinema and airlifted to hospital by Medivac.

Metro Vancouver has been plagued by gang shootings this year. There have been 10 homicides so far in 2009 and many other near misses.

Police have been so concerned that they have put out public warnings related to some of the threats targeted the Bacon brothers of Abbotsford. One of the Bacons was shot at outside an Abbotsford mall Jan. 22. He survived.

On Tuesday, gangster Raphael Baldini was murdered outside Guildford Town Centre as he sat in a borrowed Range Rover at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday. Both Bacon and Baldini have been linked to the Red Scorpion gang.

Twenty-one year old Brianna Kinnear was shot to death at the side of Port Coquitlam road less than two hours after Baldini was killed.

And on Monday, James Erickson was gunned down in his apartment building on 105A in Langley.

Eliminating compitition is always good for business. You then have a monopoly on the market; furthermore, all this media will eventually die down and our judicial system wont change so for them, it's just a matter of waiting it out.

If you ever felt like shooting someone now is the time, every shooting from this point forward for the next while will be "gang related"

dont think so

when i was driving to langley on thursday i pulled up behind a Abbotsford Police car, it's kinda odd colors so i was like wtf.. why is this guy here? Langley is RCMP

then i pull up one car and the cop is trailing an abbotsford cab car that had one of the brothers sitting passenger, i recognized him from the news etc. Cops from abby trail them whervever they go so they dont get popped in broad daylight because they are such high risks

Berzerker 02-06-2009 11:38 PM

lol No man they aren't followed by the po po. We will see on the news tomorrow ;)

Berz out.

Damn, I left the IGA parking lot a few minutes before it happened. I live a few blocks from Thunderbird. By the time I got to 208th, I see an RCMP cruiser flying down the street. I've never seen one driven so dangerously. Brake dust all over the place and drifting around corner. I honestly didn't think he'd make the corner. I wish I had stayed at IGA longer to see the action first hand. I had a video camera in my car at the time, too. Walnut Grove is no longer a sleepy neighbourhood. Oh well, still hella safer to live than other places.

the person that was shot was linked to the Bacon brothers Kevin LeClair was the person shot

Do you really want to be around when automatic weapons start going off?

Sure, it'll be exciting. Besides, if I get shot and croak, I'm worth more to my family dead. Worth even more if I lose a few limbs. LOL.

I was alone, but wouldn't wish to have been there if I was with family at the time.

I agree. BUT. You dont eliminate competition in a crowded mall parking lot.. That is just dumb. Lots of witnesses and cameras everywhere and if an innocent person gets killed the police are gonna be coming after you 100x more then if it was just the target killed.

The only issue I see is that it would be hard to get info out of these guys if they do catch them. If they could threaten to throw these guys away for good they would have a better chance of getting testimony from them about other activities happening in the gang. Right now its like "if you dont talk you are going to jail for at least the next 5 years"
