Shaw limiting BT traffic. how to bypass?

ok now Shaw is throttling back my BT downloads so even my internet comes to a halt. any new BT cliets that can sneak pass Shaw's packet sniffers?

jackmeister 02-11-2009 08:37 PM

Has this worked for you?

I tried it and noticed no difference.

willystyle 02-12-2009 12:12 AM

^ It works for me, if not, then ur ports are probably not properly forwarded, or ur area is currently being upgraded.

hotjoint 02-12-2009 06:35 AM

i'm with shaw and have mine encypted, works great

Are you using a router?
If you use Utorrent go to preferences and lower the number of maximum connections. My linksys router would overload when there were to many connections.

Psykopathik 02-12-2009 01:39 PM

i have a dlink router, even with 1 download going the net slows to a grinding halt. i'll give utorrent a shot.

Eclypz 02-12-2009 03:56 PM

Shaw throttles torrent downloads, which makes Torrents download super slow...but it shouldn't affect your general internet speeds.

But if your internet is slowing down because of torrent downloads, that's your router not being able to manage the number of connections properly. (P2P and Torrents use many simultaneous connections)

This is common problem for lower-end routers. Lower the number of max. connections in your Torrent client. Start with 50 connections and move up from there.

Or google your router and see if you can find out the number of connections it can handle.

whats a good router for torrents anyway?

definitely not linksys wrt54g (its even mentioned on utorrent site)

thats the router I have and I had to reduce the # of connections. I here using 3rd party firmware fixed the problem. I will have to give that a try someday.

WRT54G is fine

For even a better router, flash it to DD-WRT!

Depends on the revision.

see the aforementioned FAQ on uTorrent's site:

yep...
but meh...it's easy enough to enable encryption...

Psykopathik 02-13-2009 09:10 PM

when i moved to Coquitlam it was throttled when i used Bitcomet, then i used Vuze and it ran fine for a year. now it went to shit

are you on XP?

if so, adjust ur TCP connections from 10 to 50. That should allow more connections and not boggle your connection when running a torrent download.

I can't say that I've noticed throttling with Torrents on Shaw. Most of my dl's are downloaded within a reasonable amount of time, it seems. I'm using Azureus Vuze, although uTorrent is popular. I may try this.

Manic! 02-14-2009 07:58 PM

I have talk to shaw many times and they tell me they don't throttle and I believe them.
Most problems have tp do with the routers people are using and the way they have there bit torrent program setup.

PS: I have a friend that works for Shaw and he said "Don't ever ask anything technical when talking to a CSR"

Vuze and uTorrent both have the ability to use encryption, which is key. I don't know why anyone would use anything else.

The Linksys WRT54G has a problem with leaving idle connections open. I don't think this affects all of the WRT54G models, and I believe the 3rd party firmware you can flash it with will fix this.

B-DiZzLe 02-15-2009 03:30 PM

I don't notice anything, I'm on shaw extreme and I download at 1.5mb/s and upload at 100kb/s. I'm on the WRT54g router and using utorrent or ABC, never noticed anything.

Cman333 02-16-2009 02:50 PM

I'm on shaw using utorrent

just click encrypt packets

getting 1.1MB/sec download on Extreme

Yup. I 2nd that. I have the WRT54G.

You need to port forward and flash the firmware on your router. Make sure not to do it wrong or you run the risk of bricking your router.
