Selling on ebay

So I've been looking around for answers but I havent seen an exact answer im looking for. Just started a sellers account and as far as shipping goes, how does it work? like...Lets say someone buys my item, and the shipping cost is 7$, do i bring the item to the post office, they mail it and the person at the other end picks up the 7$ charge on pickup? Or are they paying me the shipping cost in advance with the purchase, and i go and pay it at the post office, is this why people gouge on shipping, to make extra profit?

You list how much shipping is up front and the buyer pays that to you along with the bid price of the item.

It's up to you to decide how much to charge for shipping.

You can check the price beforehand and charge the actual cost of shipping, or maybe charge a couple dollars more for packaging... or charge a lot more just for the hell of it.

you pay the shipping when you post the item, just like you would when you mail a letter.

So...just make sure you fill in enough to cover your shipping costs. I've burned myself a few times and was a few dollars short in the shipping. In those cases, you gotta eat the cost. You can't go back and ask for more.

I think the inflated shipping is also the "loophole" to get around eBay fees as (and correct me if I'm wrong) the fee is calculated on the sale price before shipping costs are added on. The $0.01 product, with the $20 shipping.

You can either post up the price of shipping (which can include your "handling" charge) up front, so that when the auction ends, they can quickly pay you the winning bid + shipping, or you can communicate with the seller what the shipping amount is after the auction.
