I have a friend who is on his 3rd year right now and he likes his job. He doesn't do new construction though which is probably what I would have done if I were him but whatever floats your boat. I believe he works commision now instead of hourly because he makes more money.
When he got the job he had no experience just called around to find a job. My advice would be grab a phone book and start cold calling. If possible try and get a hold of whoever does the hiring instead of leaving you're number with the receptionist. Let them know that you are serious about it, reliable and a quick learner who's willing to do whatever it takes you just need someone to give you a chance. If you're sincere and they are in need of people I'm sure you can find someone who will give you a shot.
I've never been a plumber but in our construction company resumes are useless I just shred them without reading, cold calling or responding to an ad is the only way to get a job.
Just an FYI about my friend. When he first got this job he was the bottom of the shit list so to speak so he would get called out to all the nighttime emergencies and things like that as well as getting all the shitty shifts. If you are doing new construction the late nights won't usually apply but if you're doing residential maintence stuff like broken pipes and stuff like that it might be an issue at first.
Goodluck
