Hyundai Equus

Hyundai hints at U.S. sales launch for Equus flagship
Posted Today, 7:08 AM by Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Hyundai has developed a new large luxury saloon to replace its Equus flagship and now the first official images of the car have leaked following the launch of the vehicle at a press event in South Korea today. The new model continues the Equus name in its home market but latest reports indicate that the car could be sold in the U.S.

The previous Hyundai Equus first entered production back in 1998 and had barely undergone any changes since then. The car was developed together with Mitsubishi, which sold it as the Proudia in Japan. The latest model is based on the Genesis RWD platform and is available with a range of V6 and V8 petrol engines.

Having won the 2009 North American Car of the Year award for its Genesis Sedan, there is mounting speculation that Hyundai will attempt to capitalize on this success by launching the Equus in the U.S. as well. OhmyNews is reporting that Hyundai hinted at the Equus being sold in global markets as the 'Genesis Prestige’, where it could be a competitor to cars like the Mercedes Benz S-Class and Lexus LS. Measuring in at a generous 5,160mm in length, 1,900mm in width and 1,495mm in height, the Equus certainly has the size factor nailed.

The powertrain lineup is also respectable, with the Equus launching with a 3.8L Lambda V6 and a 4.6L Tau V8. A long-wheelbase model will eventually be offered, complete with a brand new 5.0L version of the Tau V8. Advanced safety features include a new vehicle stability system and camera-based lane departure warning system. The car has also be fitted with LED enhanced head and tail-lamps, as well as pre-safe seatbelt technology.

EDIT:
ok according to www.response.jp, the car will be powered by...

290hp 3.8L V6
368hp 4.6L V8
420hp 5.0L V8

hk20000 02-17-2009 04:03 PM

is this car going to come with that fancy s/c 4.6 with cylinder deactivation technology on it?

Coz that'd be real nice.

Berzerker 02-17-2009 04:32 PM

Fuck Hyundai is coming out with some badass cars. They should do what Toyota, Honda, VW. and Nissan did and make another company like Lexus, Acura, Audi, and Infinity. They could do with a new image and get away from the Hyundai stereotype.

Berz out.

Honyoung 02-17-2009 04:38 PM

just loooks like the genesis to me but still very nice ride

Berzerker 02-17-2009 04:41 PM

I dunno what pics of the Genesis you have seen but this to me looks nothing like it... the Genesis looks like a sports car this is a luxury sedan.

Hyundai still has lousy quality, apparently. People keep telling me the Genesis is a deathtrap. O_____O;

But I like this design!

roastpuff 02-17-2009 06:04 PM

Front is S-class-ish. Rear is Bentley-ish?

If it ripped off of anything it ripped off a Crown Athlete for the front.

but seriously, who penned these models? It's so difficult to find a sane and tasteful car exterior designer these days and I think Hyundai has got a great one.

+Kardboard+ 02-17-2009 09:22 PM

That's where I saw that before. I loved the Crowns! Ever since the one I rode in as a baby. ^___^

Timpo 02-17-2009 09:56 PM
