Where to buy High End headphones?

I was looking to grab a pair of gaming headphones and was interested in picking up one of these GameCom 377's... I checked out FS, BB, those types of stores in town, didnt see any. Newegg has em, but I was looking to buy em in stores just cause I hate waiting/dealing with shipping.

Anyone know any places that carry high end headphones / headphones + microphone locally in stores?

thanks

crazy markup for ordinary headphones. dr.dre headphones = marketing gimmick just like blose. nuff said.

Bonka 02-24-2009 03:07 PM

Almost all higher end headphones will require an amp to power it. Don't waste money on them if you can't use it with an amp.

I would first determine what you will be using the headphones for (gaming, music (what genres), combination) since all headphones will sound different and will largely depend on what your ears prefer.

Those PortaPros vancityguy mentioned are really awesome. They would be a great pair for street use and sound better than others at a minimal price. They were selling them as cheap as $7 before.

I would check out this thread here:

Beats by Dr.Dre are apparently pretty good... might be a marketing thing though since some famous ppl use em.. like lebron :P

They suck. I tested out the pair at Futureshop.

Bleh. All lows, bleh mids and no highs. Plus they're built like crap, feels utterly cheap.

I'd pricematch them using shopbot or pricegrabber though. Used to have the PC151 - awesome for FPS gaming, mike was super-clear and really easy to hear exactly where the guy behind you was. Great until my brother rolled over them with his chair... gah.

DragonChi 02-24-2009 05:11 PM

you can get used high end stuff from head-fi.org
it's really hard to get high end headphones in canada.
i had to look on ebay, and for awhile looking to ship something to the states and pick it up there

Was this in Canada? I know there was a thread about this on head-fi but it was only for the US.

And to the OP- Canada has insane prices, not even worth it. Some store on broadway wanted $150 for grado sr 60

Bonka 02-24-2009 06:18 PM

Yeah that was in the states, however I have seen them as cheap as $15 at A&B, FS and Radioshack before and then one day they jacked the prices up. I bought mine on EBay new for $10. At the time shipping was more than the item itself.

Actually, if you're interested in Alessando headphones (retuned Grados) they offer free shipping to anywhere in the world. I purchased my MS1's on their website. One of the best headphones available in the $100 range category.

I had someone from Head-Fi get me a pair of Koss KSC75 for $14. Best $14 ever spent. Not the best looking clip-ons (in fact, my friends say I look retarded), but they sound great. Excellent treble extension (might extend a little too much for some, slightly fatiguing on some songs for me), generally smooth (a little lacking in the mids IMO), and great bass response.

ksc75's use the same drivers as porta pro/sporta pro but they are titanium or something thus giving it a 'brigther' sound whereas portas are deep and bassy. ksc75's are on ebay for like 16 bucks shipped to canada! not too bad. i got my porta pro's on ebay for 33 shipped to canada, brand new in box of course.

werd, plus with the lifetime warranty your covered for life haha well you just pay the shipping but still beats buying a new set.

b0unce. [?] 02-25-2009 02:00 AM

thanks for the suggestions.

i dont mind spending alot of money... but i sort of wanna stay in the price range of around $100 - $150...

I do intend to use em for gaming / music, so a headset with mic would be nice.

i heard Steelseries are pretty nice.
