| Should I buy an RX8??
Hey my buddy wants to sell me his 04 black mazda rx8. He has stock rims that he painted black and has black intr. He has 5% tint on back and rear side windows and i think 50 or 30% on the side. Its a 4 speed auto with f1 tip shifters. It has about 6x xxx km. I love every thing about it but the only gay thing is that its a rotary engine and its a rebuilt. He said he'll see to me for around $7,000. Should i buy?

The engine should have lasted longer than that...what happened to it?

as we have said in your other thread, STAY AWAY. its a rebuilt first off and second its a rotary which is a horrible engine that likes to guzzle oil and gas.

Hell no!
I've owned two Mazdas (FD RX-7 and Millenia S) and both were whores. Stay away unless you like pouring money into repairs +/or gas.
There is a reason your buddy wants to sell it...

Seriously, how about you just make up your own mind. Do some research, drive it, and decide if it's what you want.

It's an automatic, auto + rotary is never a good combination. I love rotaries but they're definitely in a higher maintenance bracket, you'll need to develop a few habits to keep them happy. First off you'd have to redline it at least once every couple days to keep carbon from building up. Next you need to check your oil fairly often if you don't already. I don't know about the rx8 but rx7's used about 1 litre of oil per 1000km. They have an oil injection system which does this, keep the seals lubricated so that you don't have to rebuild every fill-up. Quite likely your friend has been doing none of these things. So even if it is a rebuilt engine I doubt it's been well kept in his hands.
Even at that price I wouldn't take it.

I'm on my second RX8 and have had no issues. You do need to drive them quite hard. I have never used more than half a litre between changes. Yes the RX8 has a oil metering injection system. I'm not sure if I would buy the auto or a rebuilt.

Don't you think it's a stretch to say that coming from an FD? He doesn't have a mess of vacuum lines to deal with and an idle above 1000 to be fair.
Seriously, I wish I could afford one. Decent power, good handling and some modicum of practicality? Fuck yeah.

^no 7 should idle above 750rpm regardless of year, unless there is a problem with the idle control, or they are heavily ported and running a standalone.

Geby is coming from an FD with an extended port. If he's not above 1000rpm he's damn close.
Eh, whatever. Best advice is just to drive the thing and see if he likes it anyhow.

the rebuilt motor isnt an issue as long as it was rebuilt well..... its probably a good thing.
Id stay away from the rx8s though and jump in an rx7 provided you do not mind wrenching on the car yourself. If you want dealer support go with the rx8. I do not have much experience with the 8s but with the 7s they are good as long as you dont mind the trouble they find themselves in on occassion.... its like having a hot girlfriend.

he's probably referring to a rebuilt title, as in it was in an accident where ICBC wrote it off and a shop rebuilt it, not the engine.

ah, in that case make sure the frame isnt damaged and it could be decent.... not for $7,000 though
The last car that I lost was written off from ICBC because of suspension failure and since it was a BMW and ICBC likes oem the bill quickly ran up to $7,000. There was no body damage at all except for some paint scrapes, just 2 wheels (along with the tyres), a front control arm and the rear shock & wheel hub assembly (the rear shock snapped where it connected to the hub). I priced everything out online before I went to them as they told me the suspected list of damaged parts. I came out with a worst case cost around $2,700usd; this included 4 shocks&springs, 4 wheels, 4 tyres, all the control arms, and oem replacement rear breaks & lines (that were supposedly damaged)... .this was just buying online without any kind of super discount -_-.
.... sometimes those rebuilt titles are not as 'rebuilt' as they seem.

OMG test drove an RX8 once, How do people drive these day to day? there's 0 power for the first 5 or 6000 rpms...
Get a genesis 2.0T cheaper, more powerful, probably more reliable or cheaper to maintain

It's a relatively cheap "sporty-looking" car.. but personally I wouldn't take one. My brother had one, and it chugged gas like no tomorrow for very little power output..
