One thing you should also do is if you have windows in your backyard that are low to the ground..put some metal bars on them. And if you want, you could put them on all the windows you think people would break to gain entry from but that would be a little extreme. It's what we did after my house was broken into.
I don't like that look especially in this neighborhood I would be the only one. This is supposed to be a very very safe neighborhood. Neighbors can't remember the last time there was a incident in the last 10 years.

Plus even the cops were surprised and 10 showed up within minutes.

What I did though is put a two way lock on the gate doors (no key, no entry or exit). Guard puppy that may or may not pee on the thief if he tries to break in. Two cameras with night vision in the back (they glow red when they detect something and it's actually a bit creepy unless you know it's a camera). Two hidden cameras in front of the house to look for traffic. We're replacing the fence (we were going to do this anyways but the new one is a bit higher with the mesh at the top). And lastly, my favorite part, is I'm adding bullet-proof glass to all windows and patios on the main floor. I was going to replace the windows anyways but for a extra $50 per window, they gave me a option of making them bullet proof All windows can be opened from the inside or using an axe (in case of fire) and I've got a LOT of windows and patio doors so safety has already been addressed. The windows in front of the house will remain regular windows just in case since the thief would have to be very ballsy to try going through the front windows.

All that's left are spikes and nails near the fence so if anyone jumps over it they get 2" of nails up their feet (yes I'm kidding but it'd be nice, wouldn't it ?)

Are your windows barred up?
I think thats the cheapest way to keep thiefs away.. Unless they picking to get you.. barring your windows will make them go away. that and its cheaper then getting a whole new alarm and what not.

Btw good idea with the dog =p, my dogs goes nuts and starts barking like crazy when someone cuts/creeps by my house.
