AMSTERDAM – A Turkish Airlines plane with 134 people aboard slammed into a field while attempting to land at Amsterdam's main airport on Wednesday and broke into three pieces. The airline said everyone on board survived.

Police spokesman Jaap Hage told The Associated Press the 737-800 had crashed in a field next to a runway at Schiphol Airport.

The plane, Flight TK1951, left Istanbul's Ataturk Airport at 8:22 a.m. (0622 GMT) bound for Amsterdam.

In Turkey, Candan Karlitekin, head of the airlines board, all 127 passengers and seven crew members survived the crash. Turkey's Transport Minister Binali Yildirim earlier said there were 135 passengers and eight crew.

Dutch television images showed police and rescue workers swarming around the wreckage and ambulances rushing to and from the scene. Both of the plane's engines were torn off and lay around 100 yards (100 meters) from the remains of the fuselage.

There was no immediate word on what caused the crash, which happened in slightly misty weather with little wind. A reporter for Dutch NOS news said the plane appeared to have hit the field some two miles (three kilometers) short of the runway.

A photo shown by the NOS showed the plane lying in three pieces in the muddy field. It did not appear the plane had caught fire after the crash.

Judging by the size of those exits, plus the fact that they're above the wing, I think they're emergency exits.

no fire + falling short of the runway

makes me think they weren't given enough fuel when they left Istanbul.

orange7 02-25-2009 07:21 PM

is there still any food in the plane?

Not really racist! 02-25-2009 07:30 PM

hamhead 02-25-2009 10:54 PM

all these crashes.. are they all 737s???

no_mercy 02-26-2009 10:05 AM

reports from witness say there was a pitch up in attitude so if there was a fuel starvation, in no pilot's mind would anyone pitch up

and fuel vapour is much more explosive than liquid fuel so it should've exploded on impact if that was the case.

the flaps were at 40 degrees meaning there wasn't any engine failure before hand or else it would've been at flaps 15 degrees

and no, not all crashes are 737

Harvey Specter 02-26-2009 09:59 PM

2 of the died were Boeing employees and it looks like engine failure.

flaps were at 40 when the aircraft crashed. if there had been engine failure, the procedure would be to have flaps at 15 degrees.

and notice how the engine is thrown in front of the cockpit? it might be an indication that take off go around thrust (TOGA) was applied for a go around
