No, it's just some drives transfer at a higher speed than regular flash drives. I've got a couple - the OCZ "Dual Channel" stuff is really fast, one of the fastest ones on the net.

DVD should be faster but if you factor in all the overhead such as opening the loading burning program, lead-in, lead out, probably not by too much assuming comparing to a decent flash drive.

Meh ...

It's better than average, but nowhere near as fast as my Voyager GT and Cruzer Contour (about the same in write speed, but the Cruzer Contour absolutely smokes the Voyager GT in read speed) ... I got my GF the Rally 2 8 GB because it was cheap @ NCIX after pricematch ($9 after MIR), but it's definitely not fast enough for me ...

The Rally 2 took 2:06 to write a single 1 GB .rar file (best of 3 transfers), which works out to about 8:24 for a 4 GB file. In contrast, the Voyager GT and Cruzer Contour did the same file in 0:54, or about 3:06 for 4 GB, roughly 5 minutes quicker. Comparing the budget Sandisk Cruzer Micro (those black plastic sliding pieces of shit they sell at Staples and Futureshop), it did the 1 GB file in 3:20, or approximately 13:20 for a 4 GB file, a whopping 10 minutes slower than the Cruzer Contour and Voyager GT.

Anyways, DVD vs. Flash drive is a complicated answer. With a high-speed drive (25+ MB/s) and large files (i.e. Movies), a flash drive will be faster (~3 minutes). The flash drives tend to choke when it comes to smaller files, though, whereas DVDs remain unaffected (a 16X DVD should take about 3:15 to write the disc, plus another 1-1.5 minutes for preparing and closing the disc, or about 4.5-5 minutes in total).

Writing photos on my high speed drives takes approximately 2:25 to write 1 GB, so about 9:40 for 4 GB, or about 5 minutes longer than a DVD. The Rally 2 did 1 GB of photos in 4:26, which works out to about 17:44 for 4 GB.
