That is very true, but it will also get a C or C- if you put that in OP's paper :)

Why would identifying stock price changes due to market fluctuation beyond a company's control be bad?

One of the things our finance prof taught us is alway identify changes due to market vs company performance

Of course on the paper, he should also mention Sony has been lagging behind its competitors due to lack of corporate strategic direction and operational excellence...etc
But most of the large drops it has experienced in the past decades are resulted from market changes..i am sure if you look at Sony competitors, you would see similar downswing during the same time period

well samsung and toshiba are also well diversed. but i agree with you that sony targetted to high end merchandise. when you have companies that compare quality of product, other competitors selling at lower prices were seen to be on the same level for quality.

but yeah, they marketed their products as high end and charged so much that people looked for cheaper alternatives to sony. and since technology is so competitive, there was plenty of other companies people went to.

basically sony has to find a way to make money from their sales of ps3 systems to get them back up there. the revenue they earn from game sales will definitely not make up the deficit caused by the ps3

it would be good if you can find the amount of patents issued for sony and its competitors during those years. perhaps you will find that during the peak of Sony's stock price their RD was strong with many new patents being issued. Perhaps RD has slowed resulting in less "new" technology ?

just a thought.

it doesn't help that the technology developed for the ps3 was used to make the 360
