I think I recall reading that the velocity of the shuttlecock is the fastest out of any human propelled object in sport...

It looks like the hit exploded less than 3 feet from the target. The birdie would lose a lot of energy the further it has to travel, so unless your face is right there, i don't think you have to worry about getting your skull cracked.
