Great conceptual ideas, but how many of these would actually be embraced by business and consumers? I see a lot in there for geeks and technophiles, but thats it.

If a business could be more effective at doing business, why wouldn't they? If a consumer could make their every day life easier/better, why wouldn't they? If a school could be more effective at teaching students, would they say no?
Doctors can already do surgery's over the internet using web cams and robots. Have you seen the Microsoft multi-touch "Coffee table"? Just a matter of time for the software to come out to make it available to all businesses (cheaper). There are tons and tons of companies developing large multi-touch displays/software. What's the use of multi-touch? It's a super smart white-board.
As for the news paper, print-news companies are already suffering greatly. Digital paper (not sure of the exact name) is already in development....The "hardware" would be a one time purchase, then you would pay $1 for the content. It's the exact same as the news paper, except no cutting down trees/waste/ink costs.
Look at the original computer for example, I'm sure people were thinking the exact same thing. "Oh that's cool, but why would an every day person need one?"
They will happen, just a matter of time and money. Mainly the cost of technology to drop, as it always does, then the mass markets will have it.

Its shit like this that makes me hate assholes like Linus Torvalds even more. Yes, you're making a great alternative to mainstream software but you don't have to attack Microsoft by being motivated purely by cash to work within the computer industry.
Microsoft brought the computer to the common user and helped put one in almost every household (sorry, Apple) and is continuing to be innovative in a field that is over saturated by imitators.

With this technology, it's been said that jobs as a waitress in restaurants will be eliminated cause there won't be a need for waitresses to take orders. The display will be built on to the table, everything from ordering to paying will be processed on the dining table. The only procedure that requires a form of human assistance will be the delivery of food from the kitchen to your table.
Of course, this is only one of millions of uses for this technology, but just imagine how much money you can save if you don't have to hire 8-10 waitresses to serve in your restaurant. This technology will pay for itself when it becomes mainstream.

Just an interesting comment that someone posted to the vid: Microsoft produced this "future vision", implying that it intends to develop in the direction of what was shown... but it's not like they committed to any of the projects. Just another advertisement.

that was impressive but yet was a bit scary...
with all these technology coming to the market, only the wealthy one could get their hands on... what about rest of the poor people or not so wealthy people ??
i think there will be a huge gap between the 2 groups ....
there is no way for people to catch up with the newest technology with the money we are making right now ...unless the wealthy one
by the time one technology became commonly affordable for most of the people, another newer technology is presented onto the market again

I have a secret hate for Linux fanboys.
They always say there are 100 stupidly named programs that do just what the program that costs 100's does. My problem is there is minimal new developments in the linux fields. Things that make Adobe and Microsoft look archaic. It's all rip offs.
Yes, its stable, and yes its free but ripping off office is one thing and generating new ideas to make office better is something else.

^ i got your idea, but look....take tv as example ..
HD TV was introduced 3 -5 yrs ago?? ( not quite sure ) ...
they finally dropped the price maybe a year and half ago? I'm sure 60% + of household owned at least 1 HDTV now., but again..thats after they dropped the price.
now look... OLED is presented onto market... sony is selling a 11" for over $2g ...
im trying to say the NOT SO WEALTHY people will never get their hands on the new product right away, by the time they have it.. a newer version is ready to hit the market.
thats life ? i should try to make more money ?? maybe...
the mark up for the new product is just way up there IMO  | |
