| Screen protectors?
Do any of you use them? I just realized how scratched up my LCD screen was on my XTi compared to the 40D (well, 40D is mint), but I never thought of getting a screen protector before.
Is it worth it? How much are they and what's the best place to get them (other than places online like DealExtreme, etc)?
Also do you guys use the hard plastic ones, or just the thin plastic ones like the ones that are used for cell phones?
Peace!

what's wrong with online places?
i got mine from brando, and i've gotten one for my gps from daiso, the widescreen on my gps is identical to the psp screen 4.3"
just stay away from kerrisdale cameras, they sold my friend this (well cheap) 3 pieces of screen protector for 6.99 and it was a similar soft material as the invisible shield, except it didn't come with solution and created tons of bubbles

Not saying there is anything wrong with online places. I'd just rather go to a local store to pick one up. Sometimes the packaging online looks different than the contents inside.
Yeah, not going back to Kerrisdale anytime soon. I've heard a lot of horror stories...

Why? what's wrong with Kerrisdale camera? share the stories!
I used a screen protector before (the one for nintendo DS). However, it kept on peeling off and I could see it getting oiler and oiler. So i threw it away.

Got one when I bought my XSi in Singapore... guy in the store cut it and applied it for me. You can't tell that it's on, and it's not peeling, and it's been very good at being scratch-resistant.
It's not hard to replace the actual plastic screen piece for the camera, a $20 piece if I remember correctly that you can source at most camera shops.

Yeah, that's true. But it is easier and cheaper to just replace the screen protector than to replace the plastic window itself.
So... any suggestions where to pick one up locally?

I've seen London Drugs sell them by the camera counter.

i went in to ask for one, the guy said this is the only one we have etc., i said sure and if he could please apply it for me. to my surprise it was the soft kind (like invisible shield), and he applied it with at least 20 bubbles x 20 bubbles and said that was the best he could do.
i told him it's ok i'll do it myself. he obviously didn't know it was the soft kind and the only way to get rid of the bubbles was to apply it with solution under and letting it dry.

JLC: you must be a Nikon owner.
I LOVE Nikon's snap-on hard plastic covers...I wish Canons had that. I have a screen protector on my 10D (was on it when I bought it), but I'm not a huge fan of it, as it looks pretty trashed. My 20D and 30D don't have protectors on them and they're mint...but I'm pretty careful with my equipment.
Years ago in Victoria I saw stick-on HARD protectors, but they didn't have it in my screen size...too bad it would have been nice.

I just picked some up from London Drugs. You get a pack of 3 for 10 bucks, which is not bad considering they're like 10 bucks a piece when you buy them for a cell phone. I haven't put it on yet though. I also saw these other kinds, but it was more of a "pop-up" shade thingy for when it's sunny outside so you can see the screen. I think I would've found that annoying, having to have to open it every time to see what the photo came out like.

do Canons not come with the same type of hard plastic cover? do they come with any type of cover?
The Nikon one is great...its snug, doesnt move, and is as good as it gets in terms of protection

imo if you want hard plastic. go to the cell phone place next to UFO .. at the chinese mall on Mckim Way and Odlin Cres. ( main streets are garden city and cambie)
I bought the Iphone /I touch ones for my cell phone and it works great clear and everything no bubbles. cost me 5$ but thats cause im asian. i think normal price is 10$. Be all like what?! I came in last time it was like 5$haha.
i cut it to fit my phone and it wasn't hard considering all the corners on my phone are round. a LCD is square measure and cut with sharp exacto knife . done deals. never tried using scissors though.

I bought one in Japan. I usually get them for all my cameras.
Small investment and you hardly notice it.

Make sure to round the corners, as that will prevent the corners to start peeling too soon.

I just ordered a GGS screen protector from ebay for my 40D. They seem to be pretty popular. They're glass screen protectors with a 3M adhesive around the edge.
Don't mind the english.. I just copied it from the posting.
# It uses a 0.5mm ultra thin optical glass with at least 90% transmittance. With high transparency, the image is displayed in focus when applied.
# Its hardness and durability is as high as 8H and its elasticity and flexibility is 4kg/m2, preventing from being rubbed, scraped and bumped.
# It is well sealed by 3M double side adhesive tape which is not easy to be unglued. It is easy to be installed. There is no air bubble or angle occurs when applied. It is free of temperature and humidity. |
