Interested in closer shaves and at a fraction of a cost compared to your typical cartridge shaving? (ie. Mach3, Fusion, Quattro)

Shaving with a Dual Edge (DE) razor will help you get that baby butt smooth (BBS) shaves you have always wanted at only ~20 cents per blade. So what do you need to know?

Now that you help a list of places to order your stuff, lets help you choose your first products:

Razor: You can go new with a Merkur from the vendors listed above. Merkurs great for starting off with are the classic, long handle, HD which is heavier than the classic, or Barber Pole which is the long handle HD version; All of these are great to start with new. As much as I advise to those to begin with, you can also go with the old Gillettes. These you can find at your local antique store for cheaper than the new Merkurs but you would have to clean them yourselves. You could also purchase them already cleaned from a forum I will list later in their Buy/Sell/Trade section.

Razor blades: westcoastshaving is THE place to go. Get a sampler pack here because each person has their own preference to razor blades. This is the best way to start you off. Click HERE for the various samplers suiting your budget, be it $6-25.

Brush: If you are on a tight budget you could go for the $5 boar brush from Walmart or RiteAid, but I will always recommend the best badger brush from Crabtree & Evelyn (LINK). While shopping there you can pick up your brush stand too.

Shaving soaps & creams: This is an endless topic as everyone has their own preferences. You can start off with a William’s soap from Walmart for $2 or get a puck of soap and/or cream from C&E when ordering the brush. In the list of vendors above you will find an unlimited amount of soaps. Poraso/C.O. Bigelow is the benchmark for excellent creams which could be found at your local Bath and Body Works (link) while Colonel Conk is also an excellent place to start investigating Soaps.

Stypic pencil: You WILL bleed. Enough said http://forums.offtopic.com/images/smilies/wink.gif All kidding aside (kind of) if you take your styptic pencil and dab the tip in water. After such, you hold it on your nick for a second or two and viola no more bleeding! This could be found anywhere including the websites above or at Walmart for $1.50.

Often enough they will also offer a Pay It Forward (PIF) where they give the beginner everything they need to begin.

Electric

I use whatever is cheapest on the shelf.

Biotherm, so far it's the best one that I have used.

I used to use Biotherm gel, but they discontinued it so I switched to UNO shave gel, then Gatsby shave gel (seriously!!)

I just use that crappy fusion stuff that matches my razor hahha

i used to use a razor blades, but i got sick of getting cuts. i'm usually in a rush in the mornings and i often find myself with a sink full of blood. i cut myself so bad once that there were 3 deep cuts exactly matching the mach 3 razor on my upper lip. it didn't stop bleeding till i got to work.

if you want the convenience of an electric but the closeness of a razor, i suggest

i use it with nivea shave gel, don't bother using their creaming system, the refills are $10 each and will last u less than 2 weeks.

just use any gel or foam u prefer, lather it on and proceed with the electric. just as close as when i used my razor without the pain.

i like Nivea for sensitive skin, the white bottle. feels very good especially combined with the Gillette 5 razor orange thing.
