VPD will no longer have quotas for handing out bylaw tickets

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Vancouver Police Chief Constable, Jim Chu, has made some changes to his department's business plan that was presented to the Police Board Wednesday. Chief Constable Chu is instructing his officers to seize drugs rather than proceed with charges for minor possession.

Chu says that will free up officers from testifying in court, allowing them more time for other duties like fighting gang violence. Chu also says officers will no longer have quotas and goals for handing out bylaw tickets to meet the "civil city" standards set out by former mayor Sam Sullivan.

Mayor Gregor Robertson agrees with that decision, saying providing more social housing and mental health treatment would do a better job of getting people off the streets.

The Police Board also saw a report that said Taser use by Vancouver officers has dropped from 74 incidents in 2007 to just 27 last year.

What would constitute "minor possession"?

DragonChi 03-18-2009 07:01 PM

enough to get yourself rocked, anymore than that could be seen as enough to be trafficking

they had a damn BYLAW QUOTA??????????????
from wut i heard, not even vancouver bylaw officers have quotas

InvisibleSoul 03-18-2009 09:29 PM

Hopefully this will stop them or at least discourage them giving out the most stupid tickets just to satisfy their quota.

TOPEC 03-18-2009 10:29 PM

this will stop the end of the month rush where they pull over everyone, and ticket anyone possible.

Bylaw tickets, not MVA tickets, are the topic at hand...

ding ding ding...

They probably removed it because in the end it was making them no money... unlike traffic tickets...

How can they expect a crackhead bum to pay a fine?!

impactX 03-19-2009 07:11 PM

There's no MVA quota.

Nightwalker 03-19-2009 08:43 PM

Holy shit common sense in action!

Sounds good :)

Jason00S2000 03-19-2009 08:53 PM

I won't be impressed until there is talk about drug policy changes.

Until then, this is all hot air.

other than the traffic division

BTW u are not really a police constable so stop posting here and acting like one!

or go around and leaks other people wrong doing or "court order", than post it all over the net!

Thanks for supporting my claim. :)

Ludepower 03-20-2009 02:23 PM

Cause of these dumbass gangbangers...they're fucking over a lot of drug dealers...what this basically means for the time being is...instead of wasting time with traffic tickets and petty crime...all cops are on patrol now going after these gangsters...all resources will be focus on any small tips VDP receives about dial-a-dope operations, tailing gangsters, checking bars/restaurants etc.

people forget so fast when they have received generosity and start making demands and pulling guilt trips... sigh
