While that may satisfy the bloodlust you mentioned earlier, it gets away from what many people find so attractive about combat sports in general. To me, it's the absolute lack of technology. There's no advantage to be gained by wearing lighter cleats, swinging a carbon stick, or a graphite club. It's about straight up man vs. man, a test of will and determination. About who is able to devote more of their soul to prove to the world they are the best at what they do. I honestly view it in the same light as running and swimming, as being pretty much the only sports that you can do with essentially no equipment. And while I do realize there are some rules involved in MMA that take away from that to an extent (illegal strike rules/ weight classes etc.) at the end of the day, it is still not an activity worth losing your life/ quality of life over. It walks a fine line, and I'm sure the 'thickness' of that line will be forever debated.

ufc isnt how u describe at all......

if you wanted something realistic get them to fight with no rules... everything is game even biting or breaking bones

what i cant stand about UFC is its basically WWF (WWE i guess is what its called now)
it takes a step towards realism but isnt even close.... yet the contestants and even the spectators think they're "hard-core"
not only that the contestants aren't that well trained... probably because there isn't enough money behind it but if i had to watching fighting of any sort id rather watch something thats more technical with better trained athletes like boxing or muay thai or a karate/& the like match

not just a bunch of dummies that call themselves "mma" fighters because they dont know anything really well and figure that since they can wrestle their pet pig down to the ground they're "fighters"

perhaps i'm a bit bias towards "mma" but i disagree with mma being average joes that lay and pray, or go out just to bash each other with minimal skill in each martial art.

i train with some really good guys, and i've trained mainly BJJ and muay thai. most guys, 90% of the guys that i train with are very classy, very very very nice guys. so i think the whole meathead comment is 100% wrong. most "meatheads" are (and i agree) are the affliction/tapout/ed hardy douchebags that thinkt hey're hardcore cuz they like the sport and wear the "gear".
each fighter, specialized in their field is unique in their own way. i find mma is VERY technical, physical and mental chess

you're entire game plan changes if you're put against a fighter who flourishes in wrestling, jiu jitsu, or muay thai. even if it IS mixed martial arts, each fighter excels in one specific area, and will use their skills to win the fight.

i'll admit, knocking someone in the head feels great, but not cuz u hurt the guy, but more of a connected shot. subbing a guy feels great, not cuz i wanna break their arm, choke them out, but i win.
it's like a big hit in hockey, or a big hit in football, or rejecting a guy in basketball, or even a runner passing an opponent, he doesn't do it because he wants to make the other runner look like a douche, just the feeling of passing the opponent
i wouldn't say those are savage things, but it's something players/athletes strive for.

anyway, if my words are holding no grounds, go check out any gym, they often have 1-2 free day trials, just check out the atmosphere, you'll have a different view on the sport itself.

just my experience and two cents

I thought it was a cool concept when it first started... back when it actually was mixed martial arts... they used to have a wrestler fighting a black belt.. now, it's such a snooze fest, it's just two guys hugging each other on the ground.

Curious, isn't one of the most important things taught in any martial arts the concept of not using what you learn unless there is no other way out of a situation?

When is the last time you watched a UFC event, 1995? Who isn't properly trained? The last time I checked, anyone who's made it into the UFC these days trains just as hard as anyone in boxing, if not more.

I'll agree there are dumb fucks that fill the bars everytime there is a UFC PPV because they just want to see someone get knocked out...these are the same assholes that boo at events everytime it goes to the ground for more than a minute...but not all fans are that stupid.

The people criticizing MMA are mostly people that have probably seen one or two UFC's in their life and think they know everything about the sport. You may not like it, and im sure there's shit you watch that a lot of people think is a waste of time too, so whatever.

i like the technical aspect of the fight, its not just a brawl where 2 guys are swing punches at each other, but where strategy comes into play and its a mind game of when is the right time to throw a punch, take the guy down or attempt a submission

yes there are boring fights where it looks like 2 guys are huggin it out and shit, but overall its very technical and its entertaining

i do admit that its not for everyone, and all those affliction wearing idiots that don't one thing about mixed martial arts is making the sport lose some credibility

Some people in this thread make MMA seem like pointless cockfights...

truth is after most fights where it seems they try to beat 'the crap' out of each other, they have the upmost respect for each other. aka, hugging, shaking hands, words of praise, etc. something you would NEVER see that done between 2 hockey players after a fight.

There are dumb fans in every sport. Look at how many people showed up to view the hockey night fight event a few years back. If you are uneducated about a sport, then you will only go there to see blood.

I dont train MMA myself, but I consider myself a fan of the sport. I'd rather see a 'boring' techincal fight that ends up in a submission than to see a short one punch KO.

And I agree with what someone said above about how classy they are. I took MMA for a short time period and the people there were super nice and welcoming. Instead of putting a newbie in a submission they took the time to show the right movements, etc.

P.S

Anyone train in Richmond? I wouldnt mind trying it out again. Last time I tried it was a good 6 years ago

i at one point that that UFC was just two people who wanted to beat the shit out of eachother and thats it

but if u see the fighters on a personal level they actually enjoy the technical aspect of fighting. some fighters have a degree and education but chose to be in MMA b/c they love fighting.

and people who watch also enjoy the technical side of things

I'm not even going to bother justifying this to all the ignorant fools in this thread.

All of the MMA fans will know and love the sport for the exciting and technical aspects of it. There will always be close minded fools that think this is nothing but human cock fighting when the truth is that this sport has done everything in its power over the past decade to make this a legitimate sport. There's a reason why boxing has been on a decline and the popularity of MMA has shot through the roof.

I thot discipline is the first thing they teach to people learning fighting skills. The better u r, the more discipline u have to exercise. So the last thing u'd do is to beat the shit out of each other in public.

I'm not ignorant towards the sport. I just don't find the appeal behind a sport that is okay with KO's. I understand and respect that many people watch the sport because of the technical aspect and that it's really quite interesting seeing two people with different martial art backgrounds work their skill. I've honestly no problem with that. I just personally don't find it appealing.

And, yes, most martial art schools teach that the skills you're learning are designed as a way to work out, learn discipline and to use your knowledge as a last ditch defense if you or someone else is in physical trouble.

Jason you really need to fuck off with your constant useless two cents that you are flooding this thread with. You obviously have never trained or even tried to understand what goes on in a gym. Some people like to watch MMA and wouldn't mind for it to be sanctioned in Vancouver, so unless you have something useful to contribute stop posting.

- GEORGES ST. PIERRE SIGNS DEAL WITH GATORADE
Sunday, March 22, 2009 - by Damon Martin - MMAWeekly.com

Joining a list of athletes like Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Derek Jeter, Peyton Manning and many, many more, Georges St. Pierre, has signed on to be a major part of Gatorade's latest campaign as one of the faces of their "G" marketing onslaught.

The Gatorade "G" campaign launched in the U.S. during the Super Bowl in January with many top flight athletes representing the brand. Now the company will move north of the border with a group of Canadian athletes to represent the brand.

Along with other top Canadians such as Gordie Howe, Cassie Campbell, Ray Zahab, Chantal Petitclerc, and Bradd Arseneau, St. Pierre will serve as one of the leaders to help push Gatorade in the newly branded market.

“Just like in the U.S., the Canadian Gatorade brand is recognizing some of our nation’s most influential and inspiring athletes,” said Dale Hooper, vice president of marketing for Gatorade in Canada. “These athletes represent Canada’s best while also serving as motivation to any Canadian who sweats, whether they’re in it to win, for the fun of it, or for better health.”

St. Pierre's addition to the Gatorade campaign can only be seen as a huge step forward for the marketing and advertising future of mixed martial artists who are looking to cross over into more mainstream work.

Late last year, the UFC welterweight champion signed on with CAA, a division of Creative Arts Agency, to help push the Canadian fighter into new markets including movies, television, licensing and digital media.

This latest move for St. Pierre to sign on with Gatorade signals the first MMA fighter to be involved with the popular sports drink brand, and a definite sign of the competitors involved with MMA moving forward to being more widely recognized alongside other top athletes.

St. Pierre filmed his first commercial for Gatorade over the last week while also working on the latest film the Canadian has been involved with, the second motion picture he has starred in over the last year.
Looks like MMA sure sucks
