I have an HP and an Apple right now. I had a Compaq for a couple years before these two. Was happy with it, no real complaints. I use the HP for school and take it to class with me because I'm too scared of losing the Apple, lol. I find the Apple to be alot nicer when I got used to the OS. But the HP does what I need it to do just fine. I really don't think you can go wrong buying any type of laptop.

if you can find a used Dell XPS, it would probably be a good one to get. I had a Dell D630 for work and i use a Dell XPS 1210 personally. I had a Thinkpad, two HP's, a Compaq, a Sony, an EEPC, and an Averatec 10 inch when Best Buy still sold them. Out of all of them, the Averatec that cost 600 bux new from Best Buy was the best in terms of build and usability. Too bad someone broke into my house and stole it. THe HP, Compaq and Sony were shit build quality - look good from afar, but far from good. The EEPC was nice, but just too small for what I wanted out of it. The Thinkpad was bullet proof, and i used it right up till it died completely. The D630 that i have for work, i've put that in check in luggage, i've kicked it across the floor, i've dropped it - it still works. Heavy as a cow, but works. My current XPS is pretty nice, with everything maxed and it has the integrated video, which is a bit better cause the geforce option that was available had issues.

Is weight a big factor for you? With an extended battery, you can probably get 3-4 hours from any of the notebooks people are mentioning. It's another $100-$200 on top of the cost of the laptop, but it opens up your options for you.
The only thing you may want to think about is whether you want to carry an extra pound on the weight of the laptop.
Have you considered a Netbook (like an EeePC, Wind or an S10?) Seeing that your requirements are pretty minimal, you might be able to get away with a Netbook (for a lot less than a regular laptop). The only downside I see with a Netbook after playing around with one for the weekend is the not so good resolution of the screen.

I recommend Dell or Asus ( more asus )
(Asus has a 1 year , accident ,spill, electrical , pretty much if it breaks within a year, your warranty covers it )
you should try websites like http://www.anitec.ca/subcategory/60/...s_and_laptops/ http://ncix.com/
( there not a big chain, so you can try to baargian =p if you got the balls maybe haha)

I would look into buying the new Acer Gemstone.
4gb ram, 300gb HD, Blue ray, 16" screen (Not 15.4").
Good video card. "Virtual surround sound" on the 16" model, and full 5.1 support on the 18" model.
Here is the 18" model: | +1 on acer gemstone =] i have one too but the 18.4 version... runs great n i like the looks

holy crap...18.4" screen? Gonna need to haul that thing around on a cart! I was just fixing a buddy's laptop the other day and it had a 17" screen. Even without the battery installed on that behemoth, I couldn't imagine carrying that thing for longer that 15 minutes...I can't imagine what an 18.4" laptop all decked out would weigh...

Also, if I'm not mistaken, 802.11n is still draft, so it's not yet official. I suspect most manufacturers are making their units upgradeable though.

M1210 is pretty old. It was superceded by the m1330 which is now replaced by the Inspiron13. The gf had a m1330 but she didn't like it. She said the keyboard layout was weird. Do they have any specs on how long the 9 cell lasts for and the weight. Just make sure that weight isn't going to be an issue. Last thing you want is to leave the laptop at home because it's too heavy. I'm not sure what they come with, but commonly it's a 3,6 or 9 cell battery.
All those laptops come pretty highly rated, and one of the few models/manufacturers that give the option of a discrete graphics chipset in the small form factor. Definitely one to consider if you want to do a little gaming on them. You may be able to find a m1210 or a m1330 used on CL.
I don't use HDMI out on my laptop, but my HTPC has one. It's good for pumping out hi def video to a TV that supports it. You'll only need one cable instead of two as long as your laptop supports sending audio over HDMI.

the weight is about 2.2kg - - how heavy is that in relation to something... | Ah, so a 9 cell will give you about 6 hours of light usage and about 4 hours of heavy usage. Not too bad. Also remember that that number is going to go down as the battery ages. My IBM extended battery apparently has lost just under 30% of it's capacity in the 4 years that I've owned it.
2.2kg is about 4.8lbs. If you can find a 2L bottle of water, that would be about the weight. Is that the weight WITH the 9 cell battery or just the advertised weight in the literature? Usually the weight you see in the brochures is the weight of the laptop without batteries, peripherals (like CD ROM) and without the power adapter. Expect all that to add another 2-3 lbs of weight.
EDIT: I'm not sure if your unit is going to be a desktop replacement or purely for school, but some others to consider:
Lenovo (used to be IBM) makes a few small and light laptops that'll compete against the Dell m1210, 1330 and Inspiron13.
Check out the x200. It's their latest "small sized" notebook. Only cons are that it has no trackpad (you use the small trackpoint) and no optical drive. In exchange, you get a just under 3lb laptop with 3.1 hour battery life on the 3 cell, 6.2 on the 6 cell and 9.4 on the 9 cell. Just under $1400 at the Lenovo site.
Also, the x41 or x61 might be another option if you want to go the used route. They're a little older and probably around the same gen as the m1210/1330. They're also around the 12" size and 3lbs. Also no optical drive, but if you really want one, you can always go the external route.
To be honest, I've rarely ever had a use for my CD/DVD drive. I've only ever used it for reinstalling the OS. Otherwise, I just connect to the network via wired/wireless and pull whatever data I need.

I've got the M1210 and its awesome. Its a little thicker than the 1330 that replaces it, but its 12 inches versus 13. I get 4 hours from the standard battery on normal usage with wifi on, and about 6 or so with the extended battery. They sell the batteries locally, so you don't have to go through Dell to get a replacement. Just be careful when you look for either laptop cause the vid card is either the intel integrated or the discrete geforce from nvidia.

@ Syee - The weights were quoted using a 6cell battery, and it has a slot load dvd.
yes, this will be a desktop replacement - i dont game, the only games i play are the flash games online.. i dont like the trackpoint, and rather have the track pad.
@ Iceman - how much are replacement batteries? would it be cheaper if i get the 4cell from Dell , n then just buy a 6c locally? iirc the 6c upgrade is about $40 , and the 9c is about $100. and what is the deal with the video card? is intel intergrated bad compared to nvida? remember i wont be using it for gaming - only online flash games..
looked for a M1210, on CL , but they didnt seem too pleasing. so its been narrowed down to Inspiron 13.
if u guys want to check out the specs, here is the link: http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/...n&OC=NI13_R_1E
+ Vista Home Premium w/ SP1
+ Glossy Screen with camera - i like glossy , and i like the camera
+ 6c battery
+ 3GB Ram - is that enough for vista and running multi aps?
everything else remains stock.

everything else remains stock. | Looks decent. Also, price seems pretty good. You can probably deck it out with the options you want for under $1000, plus it's new.
Only thing I'd think about are the non-swappable components - whether you want to spring for a slightly better processor, and whether you want the Nvidia graphics add-in. Those you can't change by swapping out components so you want to get the one you want right off the bat. HD, RAM is simple (and cheap) to change. You can probably do better than Dell's prices by swinging by NCIX and picking out the components you want from there and installing them yourself if you're comfortable with that.

Not sure if you've considered this point, but is this a desktop replacement or just something to carry to class/work with?
If you'll be carrying it with you all the time, you may want to consider a smaller screen. The 15" and 16" laptops are pretty heavy to carry around all day.
I think the 12-13" ones have the best balance in terms of screen/keyboard size, battery life and weight.

I got my 4 cell replaced at $35 bux and the 9 cell at $89 from a laptop battery place in New Westminister. The integrated Intel isn't any worse or anything compared to the NVidia, just that its not as well suited to gaming. However, the Nvidia does have issues, and its not just with the 1210, the Dell D620 and 630's that used the Geforce have had issues with it.
My 1210 setup right now is a 320 GB 7200 rpm drive, 4 gigs of ram on Vista. Runs awesome for Photoshop (i can apply things to layers and not have any issues with slowness or anything) and i have Corel Draw X3 running in the background while itunes is playing my podcasts. So yeah, its plenty powerful.
Personally, if you do go with the Inspiron 13, bump the RAM all the way up. Its cheap right now, and if the board can do it, just max it. Its one less thing to think about upgrading later on. Try to get a 7200 RPM drive rather than a 5400 RPM drive though, cause the difference of 2000+ RPM does matter when you're accessing the harddrive. Quote:
