The plane smashed into the longer of Narita’s two runways, which remained closed Monday morning with all incoming flights diverted, said airport spokeswoman Misuho Fukuda.
Ikuo Uda, a spokesman for Narita International Airport Corp., which manages the airport, said 16 international flights were canceled, and that the airport was operating with only one runway several hours after the crash.
Unusually strong winds of up to about 47 miles per hour were blowing through Narita City on Monday morning around the time of the crash, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Airport officials said it was too early to say whether the strong winds caused the crash.
Local news reports said the plane was an MD-11, a widebody airliner built by McDonnell Douglas and based on the DC-10.
Strong winds and turbulence have caused other recent incidents at the airport. Last month a flight from the Philippines was jolted by severe turbulence as it circled prior to landing, injuring 50 passengers and crew members.
Narita Airport is a major international hub located about 35 miles east of central Tokyo. It is Japan’s second-busiest airport, after Haneda Airport, a largely domestic hub in Tokyo.

it looks like he pushed the nose down hard for some reason....
I don't think a downdraft wouldn't make the nose pitch down like that, it would make the whole plane just flat drop.
RIP... man that's one of the ugliest crashes I've seen.

for some reason the plane went nose first! crosswind landing would make it difficult to stay on the runway but this i dont get? u can actually see the stress going through the entire plane thats fucked! RIP

it almost looks like he was transition from a flare to a roll out (which explains dropping the nose). He could have had a similar incident to the Q400 that crashed recently. An altimeter miscal?
another scenario is that he hit some sort of turbulence, and over adjusted. Being so low to the ground, it was was unable to recover.
just a few guesses...

The landing looks normal to a little hard. The nose comes down too fast. You have to really force the nose down on an MD-11.
Different than any other aircraft I have flown (even a DC-10), the nose wants to go UP after landing.

Vol. 2 Norm 10-38:
After touchdown, fly nosewheel to the runway while raising reverse levers to reverse idle....
Maximum reverse thrust may be selected without delay and may occur prior to nosewheel touchdown.
Ground spoiler deployment causes nose up pitching moment. This effect is most noticeable at aft centers of gravity, It is important to check the nose up pitching tendency with forward pressure on the control column.
Deploying the #2 reverser also causes the nose to pitch up.
I did this in the Sim years ago.
You are landing in a cross wind and after main gear touchdown you pop the reversers and try too hard to get the nose down and the plane stopped. As the nose is still 35 feet in the air it is scary to see yourself careening down to the pavement. You automatically pull back hard to stop the nose from crashing into the runway.
At this very moment reversers 1 and 3 kick in full power and # 2 (in the tail) goes to idle causing a positive pitch moment. The ground spoilers come out causing a BIG positive pitch moment. (and boy is it big...)
With this positive pitch moment and you pulling back to save the nose, you have unwittingly rotated the aircraft. You are airborne again with the ground spoilers out and #1 and #3 reversers going full blast.
Airspeed is disappearing fast, you can't go around because the reversers are deployed so you shove the nose over or you stall and the nose GOES over.
Either way you are coming back down....and then you bounce. But by then it is too late to control the bounce.
It sucks and it is REALLY easy to do.

I see 'metal' is an avcanada user too. 
Winds were gusting up to 47mph/41knots!! Just to put that into perspective, it's nearly impossible to physically walk into a 50mph headwind. 47mph winds can rip shingles and tiles from houses.
What happens when you are doing an approach at 155knots and you have a stall speed of 115knots, and you have winds gusting to 40knots? You can get AWFULLY close to stall speed at any moment the wind decides to suddenly change direction.
In an MD11 you are supposed to add 50% of the steady wind and also add the total gusting wind above that, but only to a maximum of 20knots total addition.
The MD11 is a weird plane to land, you have to PUSH the nose down once the mains are on the runway. It's not like any other boeing or airbus where the nose comes down of it's own accord. It's a very freakish feeling when you are in the cockpit ~35feet up, after the main wheels are already on the ground, and you have to push the yoke forward to bring yourself and the nosewheel down to the pavement.
Add that to gusting winds, and it's becomes very easy to screw the pooch. You have to respect the guys that do this in these conditions.
