you guys that are flaming him and saying he should get tazed did you even read the article ...
- the passports were chinese not canadian
- he needed to take it to china to the canadian embassy
- the court documentation was on his laptop
this is just a case of border guards being assholes because they wouldn't even let him look up the #s / court documentation on his laptop so that he can confirm he was going back to china on business and needed the passports... and he should be compensated for his missed flight, because the people he was going to meet on the other side are probably really fucking pissed off that he didn't show up

So instead of thinking to himself “Hey, Ill bring along some of the court documentation for what these are actually for, and bring some of the phone numbers I need to have this verified, because walking through customs with 15 passports that are not my own my seem a little strange to officials. Especially seeing as the country I am leaving has some pretty big problems with illegal immigration from the country these passports are from”, he wanders in to customs totally unprepared. Then, after being treated like anyone else who officials are suspicions of (officers often use hand cuffs for both there own and the person in custody’s protection), he draws the race card, and fires up the press.
And us being Canadians, instead of supporting the people who protect our boarders, will cave and say that he should be apologized to. Bullshit.
Of course the next time a bunch of illegal’s are in the country, we will be screaming at the boarder agency’s asking why they didn’t do more…….. | he does have the documentations on his laptop, and it would have been an easy 1 minute job if the customs actually allow him to show them.

Customs do have a right to detain on grounds of suspicion. I think they were right in questioning and detaining him regardless of who/what he did.
He should have known that the passports would raise alarms though, and should have declared them beforehand or even inquired about it before flying to ensure everything would be A-OK.
If the customs interrogations did mock his accent, this would be gross misconduct and the guards in question should be punished.

Showing some BS on a lap top would not have sufficed. I am sure Canada customs is the same.
Being a lawyer, and apparently having dealt with this kind of thing before, I would expect he knew that already.

Even I know to print out a hard copy to go through customs, and even I know carrying multiple passports on my will for sure get questions by them

What do you really want? More gov't involvement to individual rights or less. I think you don't realize it but you're a pretty mixed up fellow. |
The trouble is that we are not holding people responsible for their actions. People will just reproduce and expect others to foot the bill for their irresponsible reproduction. This is why I suggest a license to reproduce that would not punish those who reproduce unlicensed, but instead simply reward those who did get licensed with a large tax break or perhaps some other reward.
Customs and border officials power trip more than anyone.

Customs, Police, Gov't is all there all because the alternative of them not existing is far worse than them existing.

I do not dispute the need for customs, I do dispute the quality of officers hired.

Or you mean the quality where a border guards are easily pushed over should an individual refuse compliance until his requests have been met. Such as saying "Please" first

u can really see the bias in the threads lately... when it has to do with a chinaman or even someone with a respectable job (lawyer) its all "ROAR BAD GOVT FUK EM" but when its a suspected gangster (nevermind race but we can include it).... the same ppl who are going "ROAR innocent until provin guilty" are like "HES TOTALLY A THUG; WAY TOO LENIENT; GUILTY!!"
and digital documents on your laptop are not court documents.
what do u think the customs agents are supposed to think when a guy is leaving a country with 15 passports of another country; it bleeds trafficking; of course they're going to detain and question him instead of going "oh your a lawyer ok bud cya, eh"
after 9/11 everyone gets handcuffed in the airport when theres an incident (im assuming :P )
however customs agents are assholes and i enjoy when im coming back into canada i can just tell them to 'go to hell' even if it takes me some extra time its fine

Where does this assumed privilege come from? Why does he think a government official owes him a debt because they were doing their job.
Its not like everyone carries a fist full of passports when traveling abroad. This was an unusual circumstance and warranted investigation.

"You must be involved with human trafficking with so many passports," the Customs official warned him
"I said: 'No, I am a lawyer, I told you.'"
A spokesman for the Canada Border Services Agency said she would look into the incident, but did not return calls later in the day.
Mr. Huang has worked for some of the top law firms in Canada, including Fasken Martineau in Vancouver and Torys in Toronto.
"His credentials are sterling," Vancouver lawyer Bruce McLeod said. "It's quite a shock to hear this. He is a very experienced lawyer and has been practising in B.C. for many years."
But Mr. Huang didn't know either numbers by heart and he said the Customs officials refused to provide him with a blue pages directory.
At one point, when he asked for a second glass of water, one official replied in a mocking tone, "Say please."
About 40 minutes after he first walked through the security gates, Mr. Huang said he was permitted to search his laptop for the telephone numbers of the government lawyer who was involved in the visa case. | Quote:

Regarding the man's appearance, I don't understand why the Customs officials would be against allowing him to prove himself as a legitimate lawyer instead of insulting him. I'm sure the "Say please" incident with the water isn't the only incident of them being dicks.

Could have shown his Law Society membership card... nope, instead of bringing that, he brought along passports that don't belong to him. He's been practising for such a long time, he should know how to cover his ass by having the physical paperwork to support his claims instead of only bringing softcopies with him.

i think they have the right to detain him for carrying 15 passports but if he was co-operative then y using handcuffs?
i had a bad experience with custom guys also, one time when i entered yvr from hk, they checked my lugguage and found that i had 5 pieces of jades with me which i claim it didnt worth much (which was true) but i didnt have recipt to prove it (they were gifts from my grandma), and they over estimated the value and tried to ask me to pay thousands of duty and tax and penalty, i didnt have the money with me so they said they gonna seized the jades and if i wanted them back i could go to their downtown office with the money they asked for to reclaim them, well i thought i didnt have the recipt at the first place so i couldnt do anything, they let me go but they forgot to return my british passport, i was only 19 yrs old at that time so i didnt know the procedure, i thought i had to pay the penalty in downtown to get back the passport, but hell no they said i should have kept that then i called them they they said they didnt take the passport that i was sure they did. i was a landed immgrant at that time, the landing paper was attached in the passport, i was without a passport and british embassy didnt issue hk citizen any brithish passport here anymore since china were about to take over hong kong at the time, i was stuck without a passport.
at the time i was being searched, i saw a chinese family of 4 beign searched also, they had a lot of china vast and stuff that i heard the officer saying they suspected there were illegal stuff in the vast then the guy didnt even ask and started breaking the vasts and they couldnt find anything, the women was crying and said they were being treated unfair, but they didnt speak good english they couldnt complain much.
