| RCMP Relaxes Recruitment Rules
The RCMP, which is on a hiring blitz, will now turn a blind eye to some indiscretions by its applicants, including some drug activities, CBC News has learned.
The force, which is in the midst of its largest ever recruiting drive, needs to hire close to 2,000 members over the next two years.
At the same time, an internal memo obtained by CBC News reveals the RCMP has changed its policy on drug use "to permit consideration of mitigating factors in all cases of criminal activity, which may include drug trafficking, etc."
'Our applicants that have had some minor indiscretions in the past and that disclose those to us, that's an indication of their honesty.'— RCMP Insp. Peter Kirchberger
The former policy immediately disqualified applicants who were involved in trafficking, cultivating, producing, or manufacturing illegal drugs or substances.
The revised rules say that for all serious crimes, or for any criminal offences or activity in an applicant's history in the last three years, "the regional recruiting officers must provide written rationale detailing the mitigating factors considered."
"Our applicants that have had some minor indiscretions in the past and that disclose those to us, that's an indication of their honesty," said RCMP Insp. Peter Kirchberger of the Mounties' national recruiting program.
"And if it's not a significant criminal event in the past, then we can apply mitigating circumstances and allow that applicant to continue in the process."
That means admitting to growing a marijuana plant or perhaps slipping a joint to a college roommate no longer means an automatic rejection from joining the force.
As a former RCMP officer, Senator Larry Campbell says he has no problem cutting applicants slack for youthful indiscretion, but he said the policy is poorly written and open to interpretation.
"There should be some explanation in there about what mitigating circumstances would be and under what conditions," said Campbell, who also served as the chief coroner of B.C., in an interview.
The RCMP insists professional drug traffickers would never make it through the process and that anyone who has a major criminal conviction need not apply

A close friend of mine who has been in the Navy for years applied to the RCMP a few years back, but was refused on the grounds that he smoked dope in high school, like 8 years before he applied. He got a call from the RCMP recruiters earlier this week, letting him know they were still interested. Well he's now on his way to becoming an MP through the Navy. They're giving him flexible hours to take the crim courses he needs. He'll be paid through MP school, and will be able to remain in his home community once he's sworn in. The RCMP can't offer any of that, and yet they still tried to convince him to drop everything that he's doing, pension included, and join them. They must be desperate.

Lol, I think some people misunderstand. Personally I was deferred a few months ago because I've had 2 speeding tickets in the past 3 years. Most who don't know its not an easy process to go through. You dont write a test, pass and become a police officer. I think this was needed, everyone has somthing small in there past that they regret weather it drinking too much and being thrown in the tank, or smoking a joint. We are only human, we do make mistakes, some that well before this could have affected a career. Now some people who have made mistakes, and changed atleast have a chance.

Its not for everyone. Some cadets quit training when they realize they can't handle it.

If you're a digital pirate of copywrite material does that disqualify you from being an RCMP officer?

Its up to the recruiter to make the decision. You would have to tell them how much and how long you have been doing it. Also when was the last time you downloaded illegal things.

To protect the sheep you gotta catch the wolf

| "Our applicants that have had some minor indiscretions in the past and that disclose those to us, that's an indication of their honesty"
This article is bullshit. Especially this statement above^. The integrity and honesty that they require from recruits is a double edged sword. They say that they arent looking for perfect people, but in reality, they are. People get turned away for the dumbest things right now. Recruiting will turn you away just as fast as you applied.
This is nothing but a advertising gimmick. The more people that hear about this will apply, and the more they get to choose from. Hence...the more people get turned away, deferred, terminated...etc. Realistically only about 2- 6% of applicants get hired. If you dont fit the profile, they aint gonna hire you. They just want more selection.
Anyways, the recruting process isnt all about your history anyhow. Most people find a way to fail in one of the 6-7 steps.

Reminds me of the movie Cocaine Cowboys. When Miami was hit with a huge gang + cocaine problem back in the 70s-80s. People constantly getting killed (well the people in the drug business). They relaxed they rules for people joining the police since they were short. Turned out to be a lot of crooked cops.
Running down the same path?
