Recommendations on good wireless router?
 

And again I come to the RS Comp guru's. You guys have never failed me yet. :p

I was given a D-LINK WBR-2310 and set it up. Boy is it a piece of junk. My wired connections keep cutting out once a day and I need to reset the router before my internet comes back. I've already upgraded to the newest firmware. I've done a little research and I've noticed many similar problems with it and have decided to just scrap it and buy a new one. I've used a WRT54 before and flashed it with DD WRT firmware and it was running wonderfully for years when directly connected. Wireless was iffy. Range sucked and would often cut out making it difficult to game.

What do you guys recommend? I personally don't use wireless anymore, but my gf needs it and I might possibly use it one day down the road. I have everything plugged in directly to the routers because my old WRT54 kind of sucked for wireless.

Am I better off springing for a WRT160N? Or stick with a WRT54G2? Anyone here use any of these two routers? Any issues? Are these newer aged routers better for gaming wirelessly now? Or should I stick with direct wire?

I'll safely assume Wireless N routers will also go wireless G. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

D-Link DIR-655

+1. Been running one of these for a while, it's a dream. 11N means stronger signal throughout the house, even for other machines with B and G adapters - I get better signal strength three floors away now than I did with an 11G router in the next room.

Any wireless N should be a big improvement. I prefer DLINK.

I'm in an small apartment so I'm not super concerned with range. I worry more about losing my connection.

I was reading around and people recommend the WRT54G2.

Is that DIR-655 worth spending almost double the money on? Do you guys ever have issues with it cutting out when your plugged in directly? I've never used D-Link but am now worried because of this WBR-2310.

Linksys WRT I wave been using one for a few years no problems using the stock firmware.

Linksys has been owned by Cisco for like nearly a decade ...

I haven't had any sucess whatsoever w/ Linksys's new routers from firmware problems to overheating issues.

I've been using two bridged WRT54GL's for the last couple years, and decided recently to upgrade my host router to the Dlink dir-655. So far so good, hasn't needed a restart and handles my 200+ seeding torrents just fine. Wireless range doesn't seem a whole lot better than my last routers though.

DIR-655 is not known for it's range, rather for it's speed and reliability.

If you don't want to shell for the DIR-655, the DIR-625 and DIR-615, which are also 11N models. I have a 615 that I carry with me for setting up network cameras and whatnot on-site, and it's been just as solid as my 655.

Hmm I'm looking to replace my Netgear G Mimo router. Maybe I'll look into this 655. I'll never use a Linksys.. Nothing but problems on them.

K I got the WRT54G2-CA, and I'm still having issues with the wired connections cutting out. I thought maybe it was the firmware also, so I flashed it with DD-WRT firmware for my router. So it only seems to happens when under heavy downloading.

Anyone have similar issues with their routers? So I bought a new router to have the exact same problem. Ugh. Any ideas guys?

get a faster router like the DIR-655 or 825

It's not speed that's the issue I'm having. Its dropped connections every time there's heavy downloading that's the issue.

Both my DLINK WBR2310 and Linksys WRT54G2 drop the internet connection and I have to keep unplugging it and plugging it back in for the connection to come back.

Any ideas guys?

i find that with routers you get what you pay for. aside from the extra features like QoS or gigabit, apparently it comes with reliability as well, and it's a hit and miss with lower end models from all brands. well stick with linksys or dlink, anything over $99

if you know what you're doing, a fonera with DDWRT is the cheapest and stable router you can get. it cost me $12 shipped a piece (or 2 i forgot)

I was running the old WRT54 for years with no issues, so I would've assumed the new model of the one I had would perform similar. Argh. I guess I'll exchange this one for something else and try my luck.

I'll assume the $12 option isn't wireless.

i'm talking about the processor speed in the router and not the transfer speed.

thats cuz the processor on those low end routers can't handle so many connection at the same time.

those cheap linksys can't even handle the slow internet speed you have in canada, while my 655 can handle my PCCW 100Mb line at ease.

Hmmmm good to know. I never knew the higher end routers had better processing. It would explain quite a bit.

I ended up plugging my comp directly to the modem and I still have the SAME problem. This is just weird, when my connection dies, I reset my router and the internet comes back for a little while. So you would think it was a router issue, but now since i've bypassed the router and I'm still having the same problems I don't know where to go.

I called Shaw, and they said it might be the splitter that the technician put in. I'm completely frazzled. This is just annoying, every 5 mins or so the connection would die BUT my torrents would still be downloading @ 100kbs. I should still be able to surf the net. NOW it seems the connection fine again, downloading @ 300+kbs and I'm surfing without major issues. It hasn't cut out now for the last few hours.
