Correct! To add, the car which was original written off may have been fixed back to road legal standard and therefore deemed to be suitable to be driven hence rebuilt status.

This is not true.
It is an AE86, the 86 does not stand for the year 86 rather it is the code for the car.
"A" represents the code of the engine (3A or 4A), E86 stands for the 6th revision of the fifth generation E80 corollas. These were produced between 1983-1987.
In the latter of 1987, Toyota came out with a front wheel drive version called the AE92.
