Is it good to have a remote starts on a standard car?

I heard from some people its bad to have a remote system like compustar on your manual drive car? true or false

impactX 04-06-2009 08:36 PM

You can make it so that the system only starts the car when its gear is in neutral position; but some shops won't even do it because of the liability.

Volvo-brickster 04-06-2009 08:42 PM

alarms like compustar have a mode to ensure you leave the car in netural so that you can do auto start safely and correctly

RenoMan 04-06-2009 08:46 PM

puting ur car in neutral physically. What if im on a big hill where my car gear is in 1st?

SolidPenguin 04-06-2009 08:56 PM

They wire it so that it doesnt start unless the car is in neutral. The reason for this and some shops not putting remote start on standard cars is obvious; what happens if you start a car in 1st gear? Especially without a driver.

echoboy 04-06-2009 09:05 PM

There's some safety feature for the standard vehicle. While U left your vehicle MUST be in neutral. Because while U step out your door, your engine will keep running til U close the door then the engine will shut off. Which mean make sure the vehicle is in NEUTRAL, then U can remote start next time. But if U need to left your gear to 1st. position, of course U won't able to remote start. Well, it's really depend how often U need to park your vehicle uphill or downhill?

RenoMan 04-06-2009 09:10 PM

sometime leaving ur car in ebrake is not enough when you live in hilly areas and having remote start work depending on location is shitty then. Not worth the money i guess

hamhead 04-06-2009 09:10 PM

how about turn the key yourself?

RenoMan 04-06-2009 09:16 PM

not like i want it, i was just curious. cause i thought it didnt make sense to me. normally its brake-clutch in-turn key-e brake down.

tamazoid 04-06-2009 09:22 PM

It is good to have remote start during winter time... At least it is for me! Nothing like goign into a warm car when it's freezing outside!

I've got a compustar alarm with auto start on my standard car. And like everyone said, the auto start won't activate unless the car's in neutral.

3seriesBeeM 04-06-2009 09:30 PM

I love my remote start i have compustar alarm and a manual car. I have had no problems

RenoMan 04-06-2009 09:33 PM

how you deal with big hills like in burnaby area?

fliptuner 04-06-2009 09:49 PM

The way you're supposed to park on an incline/decline - point your wheels towards the curb and use your ebrake.

I got my gf a remote start for her manual a couple of winters ago. Only bad thing..... didn't get one for myself. And yes, hers is setup so the car doesn't shut off until the driver's door closes. You can disable it by stepping on the brake after the key is removed (in case you want to park in gear) but by doing so, you have to manually start it after.

The_AK 04-06-2009 09:51 PM

curious, doesn't the clutch need to be engaged in order to start the car? at least in older cars you need to, haven't tried on my car yet.

RenoMan 04-06-2009 10:00 PM

sometime theres no curbs. even with the wheel turned sometime the ebrake doesn't hold up....now what? i mean not a lot people just relied on the ebrake on a manual car so putting it in gear is the way. Probably wont be able to relied on the ebrake if a hill size of boundary. So why do shops not install it?

Yes, all newer cars have a clutch safety switch. The alarm bypasses it.

Gh0stRider 04-06-2009 10:26 PM

when i got my compustar alarm, it was a specific one made for manual transmission vehicles. A&B sound installed it, no problem.

mmmk 04-06-2009 10:28 PM

my integra had a manual tranny. i had autostart as well.

i used autostart during the cold winter mornings when my car was parked on level grounds in front of my old house.

jlenko 04-06-2009 10:38 PM

I have an "Arctic Start" which is the re-badged Compustar you can buy off Ebay.ca. It's awesome..

While the car is auto now (again, sadly)... when it was manual, it still worked great... never had a problem. Not just nice in the winter - it's awesome being able to set the A/C when it's hot out, so the car is nice and cool when you get to it a minute or two later. Plus you can set it up to auto-unlock as you walk up to the car... like the newer luxury cars do.

Worth every penny!

you answer was posted earlier

fliptuner 04-06-2009 11:06 PM

I'm sure there's a way to do it but I wish there was an easy way to hook up the rear defrost sw. to the remote start. On my gf's car ('08 Civic), you have to manually hit the defrost sw. every time the car gets started.

CivicTypeRice 04-06-2009 11:59 PM

yo gotsta leave's it in nautral's yo

CanadaGoose 04-07-2009 01:12 AM

If you're enough of a car person to possess the need to shift your own gears, you should at least be there when you wake it up in the mornings.

I personally don't activate the auto start when I park on a hill... I leave it in gear. The e-brake on someones car that I knew failed! And his car rolled down a hill and smashed into another car.

Since I heard about it, I've always had my car in gear when I park on a hill.
