An amazing article. It's long, but VERY good. I suggest everyone read every last word. It will make you a better person (if you agree that having more knowledge makes you a better person, that is).

Culture_Vulture 04-10-2009 02:10 AM

I agree.
If you're willing to sit through the entire thing, you will come out a lot more insightful.

I usually don't bother finishing every article I find on RS, but I read this one to the very last word.

HonestTea 04-10-2009 02:22 AM

what ^ they said is right

It took me awhile to read it and it was a REALLY long read but it's a good read, not boring like other articles.

Yeah, like Physixx, I usually skim through or don't bother with many articles people post on RS but this one was different.

Vansterdam 04-10-2009 02:24 AM

Your commentary to this finely researched and largely balanced article written by The Independent, a highly regarded international paper respected higher than anything Canadian, speaks volumes of your education level.

For your sake, I hope you're between the ages of 10-13.

Really good read. I wanted to go to Dubai to work but will think twice now.

Living in a 3rd/2nd world country(Vietnam) it really puts home about the kind of shit you see around here and what people have to put up with. On this one chinese hotel project all of the workers have cement barracks that they sleep in and cannot leave the property. They dont get paid until the job is done which is now over 2 years.

Living here for almost a year now I would say that I definatly block out some things that maybe a lot of people would find disturbing b/c it is the norm.

unidentified 04-10-2009 04:40 AM

Long but definitely worth reading. Very eye-opening. All you ever hear about Dubai is the extravagant lifestyle and the outrageous buildings and man-made islands. Did it say in the article they were building an air-conditioned beach with cooling pipes underneath the sand? DEAR GOD.

I actually feel really bad for you and everyone around you.

achiam 04-10-2009 06:47 AM

Just for informative purposes, if anyone else out here would love reading stuff like this over the Province or Vancouver Sun, or anything like that, I'd really recommend you subscribe to The Economist. Its once/week, but far, far superior than anything published in North America.

Indeed. I have subscriptions to Maclean's and the Economist and both keep me more connected with the world than the newspapers or the Internet.

Good read.

slammer111 04-10-2009 07:41 AM

GREAT read.

Just imagine how many people would be in jail here if bankruptcy was not a legal option in Canada. Soooo glad I'm here.

I knew the problems were bad there, but holy geez. I'm sure you've heard about people abandoning their properties and luxury cars at the airport (keys inside) just so they can get out of the place.

Ferra 04-10-2009 08:19 AM

I always believe Dubai is a hypocritic shithole coated with golds and runs by tyrants, but the writer here sounds quite biased.

The article is very well written tho

Peturbo 04-10-2009 08:42 AM

Very good read. One of the very few long articles I've actually read though all of it.

cdizzle_996 04-10-2009 08:45 AM

Really good read.

Took a while, but unreal info.

Its too bad some people are completely oblivious.

!SG 04-10-2009 09:16 AM

brings a lot into light after the read. there are reasons why certain projects here in north america take a long long long time to produce, say a building, a structure. where as places like dubai have vast amounts of money, but even so, there is only so much work force to go around, yet they can erect buildings and structures at a much more faster rate. the different style of gov't can take some of the blame for this, and for the treatment of its workers.
Didnt we have a similar not as high profile incident here, when the canada line was first being built? i remember reading about it in the news...

anyhow, the same bit can be applied to china, as it developes, old cities being torn down to raise new ones. workers working long hours, being paid little, horrible living conditions. its what happens in developing countries.

its funny, my dad said something to me when i was really young, thats really stuck by me to this day. he said, how do you think rich ppl get rich, or stay rich? they may work hard to get their money, but to keep it, the richer you are, the cheaper you are. when you are rich, you desire to relax and not work so hard, so you start pinching pennies where you can.
Sure this comment cant be applied to everyone, but can be applied to a lot of ppl.

Carl Johnson 04-10-2009 09:42 AM

only read the first part but this pretty much already summarized the entire article

Quote:

Once the manic burst of building has stopped and the whirlwind has slowed, the secrets of Dubai are slowly seeping out. This is a city built from nothing in just a few wild decades on credit and ecocide, suppression and slavery. Dubai is a living metal metaphor for the neo-liberal globalised world that may be crashing – at last – into history.
